Do You Actually Need Third-Party Antivirus Software For Your MacBook?

The MacBook features robust built-in antivirus protection through its macOS, which includes three layers of defense: the first layer prevents malware via App Store security features and Notarization; the second layer uses Gatekeeper, Notarization, and XProtect to stop malware from running; and the third layer employs XProtect to address any malware that may have infiltrated the system. Many users report satisfaction with this native protection, although caution is advised when downloading files from third-party sources. Third-party antivirus software, such as ESET, Surfshark, Avira, AVG, and Bitdefender, can provide additional security but may conflict with macOS's built-in protections. Safe downloading practices and regular macOS updates are recommended to reduce malware risks.

The open-source mobile OS LineageOS upgrades to Android 17, escaping the ecosystem without losing the apps

LineageOS has released version 24, transitioning to Android 17, which includes numerous security patches. The update features a new image editor called Canvas, enhancements to the Android TV launcher Catapult with a battery indicator, and improvements to the music application Twelve for faster loading times. It also expands support to 24 additional devices. A comprehensive list of supported hardware and a downloads page are available in Changelog 32. LineageOS aims to provide a version of Android free from Google's ecosystem, allowing users to reduce bloatware and unwanted services, although some Google-dependent applications may face issues.

Windows 11 hides a Windows 7 folder that beats the Settings app, and I use it every day

The "God Mode" folder in Windows is a hidden feature that provides a streamlined solution to navigating settings by offering an organized index within a single folder. Users can create this folder by right-clicking on the desktop, creating a new folder, and renaming it to "GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}". This transforms the folder icon to resemble the Control Panel, allowing quick access to various settings. The folder can be pinned to the Start menu or Quick Access for easier accessibility. It serves as a useful tool for users who frequently adjust settings, making tasks like managing USB settings or adjusting processor state limits more efficient.

Technical difficulties will prevent Grand Theft Auto VI from running on PC using emulators.

The gaming community is discussing the potential emulation of Grand Theft Auto VI on PCs, with its release scheduled for November 19th. Users are considering emulators like KytyPS5, SharpEmu, and RPCSX, but experts warn against downloading unreliable software such as PCSX5. The main challenge for emulation is the console's multi-layered security system, requiring developers to find vulnerabilities in the console's kernel and hypervisor. Current emulators can only handle basic games, and significant code optimization may take months to years. Legal challenges from Rockstar Games and Sony complicate efforts to distribute unauthorized game dumps. A stable PC port is seen as a distant goal, with the best experience expected on official consoles at launch.

A practical guide to cost optimization with Lakebase Postgres

Lakebase is a fully managed Postgres database designed for modern application development, featuring an architecture that separates storage and compute with a serverless compute layer. This design allows for cost efficiencies through various mechanisms: 1. **Branching**: Developers can create isolated environments for development, testing, or experimentation without duplicating storage costs, as branches share the same underlying storage. 2. **Autoscaling**: Lakebase adjusts compute resources based on activity levels, allowing users to pay only for the compute they use. It can scale down during low activity and can be suspended entirely after inactivity, reducing costs to zero. 3. **Read Replicas and High Availability**: The separation of storage and compute allows for adding read replicas and high availability without incurring additional storage costs, as these instances utilize the same storage layer. 4. **Synced Tables**: Integration with the Databricks Intelligence Platform enables efficient data syncing, allowing users to sync only the necessary working set of data, which helps avoid unnecessary storage and sync costs. 5. **Sync Modes**: There are three sync modes (Snapshot, Triggered, Continuous) for transferring data from the Lakehouse to Lakebase, each with different cost implications based on data freshness requirements. 6. **Right-sizing Compute**: Users can set the initial compute range during project provisioning to avoid over-provisioning and unnecessary costs. 7. **Monitoring and Metrics**: The Lakebase Metrics dashboard provides insights into working set size and cache utilization, helping users optimize their compute sizing and performance. 8. **Point-in-Time Restore (PITR) and Snapshots**: PITR maintains history for recovery within a configurable window, while snapshots offer discrete recovery points. Both are priced lower than standard storage, making them cost-effective options for data recovery. Lakebase costs are categorized into compute, storage, and serverless pipeline compute for syncing data. Compute is measured by CU usage, while storage includes branch storage, PITR history, and snapshot storage, all tracked separately. Users can access detailed usage and cost information through system billing tables.

Googlebook improving ‘Better Together’ Android sync features, Samsung support rolling out

The launch of Googlebook has generated interest due to its integration with Android devices, but initial rollout revealed inconsistencies in the "Better Together" sync features. Google is addressing these issues through updates, including support for Samsung devices. Core functionalities linking Android phones with Googlebook include app streaming, notification synchronization, and the "Continue On" feature, though not all features are performing as expected. Users have reported that while Instant Hotspot works effectively, other features are slow or unavailable. Google has announced improvements to simplify the setup process and resolved a bug related to the QR code used for pairing. Users should ensure their Google Play Services is updated to version 26.37 and Cross-device Services to version 1.0.1346. Initially, there was a lack of support for Galaxy smartphones, but recent updates have allowed Samsung users to utilize the "Better Together" features. To maximize the experience with Googlebook, users should confirm their phone runs Android 17, check Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connections, use a private home Wi-Fi network, and verify relevant app versions and settings. Some Samsung Galaxy users have reported successful integration of the features following updates, indicating that initial compatibility issues have been resolved.

Болгары пользуются зарубежными торрент-сайтами

Following the closure of Bulgarian torrent sites Zamunda.net, ArenaBG, and Zelka.org, users in Bulgaria have shifted to international torrent platforms. This change was noted by Vladislav Todorov from the General Directorate for Combatting Organized Crime (GDBOC). The shutdown was part of a coordinated international effort involving Europol, GDBOC, the State Agency for National Security (DANS), and U.S. authorities, resulting in the confiscation of domain names after a U.S. court ruling. Four individuals have been arrested in Bulgaria as part of the investigation, but there has been no official communication regarding further steps. After the closures, Bulgaria was removed from the U.S. "301 List" monitoring intellectual property protection issues, while the European Union remains on the list. Todorov warned that downloading from torrent trackers poses cybersecurity risks.
