Microsoft’s new mini PCs skip Windows and get you right where your work is

Microsoft introduced Windows 365 Link in 2024, allowing PCs to boot directly into Office applications without the traditional Windows operating system. This service requires minimal hardware, enabling users to utilize lightweight devices for cloud operations. Microsoft has partnered with manufacturers to create mini PCs for Windows 365 Link, including the Asus NUC 16 and Dell Pro Desktop, both launching in the third quarter of 2026. Announcing new Cloud PC devices designed for Windows 365

In 2024, Microsoft launched Windows 365 Link, a new category of devices designed for quick access to Windows 365 Cloud PCs, enhancing IT management and security. Microsoft Permits Admins to Uninstall Copilot With Conditions

Microsoft has introduced a policy allowing Windows administrators to remove the Microsoft Copilot app from managed devices running supported Windows 11 builds (Enterprise, Pro, and Education versions). This ability is not available for consumer devices or managed Home PCs. The app can only be uninstalled if it was pre-installed by Microsoft and has not been accessed in the past 28 days. Administrators can find the setting in the Group Policy Editor under User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows AI > Remove Microsoft Copilot App. Organizations can reinstall Copilot if needed. The policy aims to provide greater control over AI integration in response to user feedback and compliance considerations.

Windows 11 Adds New Recovery Tools to Minimize Downtime

Microsoft unveiled new Windows Recovery tools during the Ignite 2025 keynote to help IT teams reduce downtime and streamline remediation processes. Enhancements to Quick Machine Recovery (QMR) include WinRE networking support, which will initially support Ethernet and later add Enterprise Wi-Fi capabilities. Autopatch can now manage and approve QMR updates, currently in public preview. Microsoft Intune's remote recovery via WinRE allows IT administrators to monitor devices in recovery mode and deploy scripts directly from the console, extending to Windows Server VMs through the Azure Portal. New recovery options for Windows PCs include a point-in-time restore feature for reverting to previous states and a Cloud rebuild feature for remotely reinstalling Windows 11 on malfunctioning devices. These updates are expected to be generally available to commercial customers in the first half of 2026. Microsoft has also introduced Autopatch update readiness in preview, providing real-time insights into device update readiness through a unified Intune dashboard. Additionally, new tools for incident management include Mission Critical Services for Microsoft 365, allowing collaboration with Windows engineers, and Windows 365 Reserve, which offers secure temporary Cloud PCs. Microsoft Intune will issue alerts when devices enter WinRE to prioritize recovery efforts, and a Digital Signage mode will prevent error messages on non-interactive public displays.

Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) vulnerability abused to harvest sensitive data

Counter Threat Unit™ (CTU) researchers are investigating a remote code execution vulnerability, CVE-2025-59287, in Microsoft’s Windows Server Update Service (WSUS). Microsoft released patches for affected Windows Server versions on October 14, 2025, and issued an out-of-band security update on October 23 after the emergence of proof-of-concept code. On October 24, Sophos detected exploitation of this vulnerability targeting internet-facing WSUS servers across various industries. The first recorded activity occurred at 02:53 UTC, where a threat actor executed a Base64-encoded PowerShell script to collect and exfiltrate sensitive information to Webhook.site. The script gathered data such as external IP addresses, Active Directory domain users, and network configurations, attempting to send this information via HTTP POST requests. By 11:32 UTC, the maximum limit of 100 requests was reached. Affected entities included universities and organizations in technology, manufacturing, and healthcare sectors, primarily in the United States. Censys scan data confirmed that the exploited servers had default WSUS ports 8530 and 8531 exposed publicly. CTU recommends organizations review vendor advisories, apply patches, identify exposed WSUS server interfaces, and examine logs for malicious activity. Sophos has implemented specific protections to detect related activities.
