Samsung is planning to enhance its One UI 7 experience by integrating several third-party applications into the Now Bar feature. Speculated apps include Kakao T, Naver Sports, YouTube, and YouTube Music. The inclusion of Naver Sports may allow users to stay updated on their favorite teams and events, similar to Google Sports. Additionally, Samsung intends to implement "forced" support for all third-party applications, broadening the Now Bar's capabilities. There are also rumors of a dedicated Good Lock module for customizing the Now Bar's appearance. Samsung has already improved access to sports scores and team updates with a recent Google Sports update.

A new Android spyware called KoSpy has been linked to North Korean threat actors, specifically the group APT37 (ScarCruft), and has infiltrated Google Play and APKPure through malicious applications. The campaign has been active since March 2022, targeting Korean and English-speaking users with apps disguised as file managers, security tools, and software updaters. Five identified applications involved are: 휴대폰 관리자 (Phone Manager), File Manager (com.file.exploer), 스마트 관리자 (Smart Manager), 카카오 보안 (Kakao Security), and Software Update Utility. KoSpy retrieves an encrypted configuration file from a Firebase Firestore database and connects to a command and control (C2) server, allowing it to evade detection. Its data collection capabilities include intercepting SMS and call logs, real-time GPS tracking, reading files, using the microphone and camera, taking screenshots, and recording keystrokes. Each application operates with a distinct Firebase project and C2 server for data exfiltration, with data encrypted using a hardcoded AES key. Although the spyware apps have been removed, users are advised to manually uninstall them and use security tools to eliminate any remnants. Google Play Protect can block known malicious apps, and all identified KoSpy applications have been removed from Google Play.

Researchers from Lookout have identified several Android applications that, despite passing Google Play's security checks, are covertly uploading sensitive user data to operatives affiliated with the North Korean government. The malware, named KoSpy, disguises itself as utility applications for managing files, performing updates, and ensuring device security, while harvesting personal information such as SMS messages, call logs, location data, files, ambient audio, and screenshots. The malware has been found under five app names: 휴대폰 관리자 (Phone Manager), File Manager, 스마트 관리자 (Smart Manager), 카카오 보안 (Kakao Security), and Software Update Utility. These applications are available on Google Play and third-party markets like Apkpure. A privacy policy associated with one app claims to protect user information but also admits that no method of transmission is 100% secure. The IP addresses linked to the command-and-control servers of these apps have been connected to domains involved in North Korean espionage activities since at least 2019.

Researchers from Lookout have identified a malware strain named KoSpy, linked to North Korean state-sponsored hackers, specifically the advanced persistent threat group ScarCruft (APT37). KoSpy targets Android devices to surveil Korean and English-speaking users and has been found on the Google Play Store and third-party app stores, disguised as utility applications. The malware can harvest sensitive information, including call logs, text messages, files, audio recordings, screenshots, and user location data. Google has removed all infected applications from its platform, confirming that the latest version was taken down before installations occurred. KoSpy first emerged in March 2022, with new samples appearing as recently as last year. The applications associated with KoSpy often have Korean titles and support both English and Korean languages. KoSpy shares infrastructure with another North Korean hacking group, Kimsuky (APT43), which has conducted spearphishing attacks. ScarCruft has targeted South Korean users and expanded its reach to countries including Japan, Vietnam, Russia, Nepal, China, India, Romania, Kuwait, and several Middle Eastern nations. In January, ScarCruft was linked to an espionage campaign against media organizations and academics, and in October, it was connected to a malware operation in Southeast Asia.
