Windows Server 2025 will introduce a feature called 'Hotpatching' that allows critical patches to be installed without restarting the endpoint. This feature will reduce the number of mandatory reboots from twelve to quarterly scheduled reboots, improving efficiency and security. Hotpatching will be accessible through Azure Arc, enabling management across different platforms, including physical servers and virtual machines on Hyper-V and VMware, provided they meet Microsoft's Virtualization Based Security standard. To activate Hotpatching on evaluation machines, users must enable the service via the Azure Arc agent, run the Windows Server 2025 Datacenter evaluation, have the KB5040435 July Security update installed, and maintain a connection to Azure Arc.

Microsoft has launched the public preview of Hotpatching for Windows Server 2025, allowing users to install security updates without system reboots by patching in-memory code of running processes. Key benefits include faster installations, reduced resource usage, lower workload impact, and improved security. Hari Pulapaka, Director of Product for Windows Server, stated that users will experience fewer mandatory reboots, moving from 12 a year to quarterly scheduled reboots. Hotpatching was previously available for Windows Server 2022 Datacenter: Azure Edition since February 2022, but standard Windows updates still require restarts. In Windows Server 2025, Hotpatching can be accessed through Azure Arc, allowing updates on various platforms. To enable Hotpatching, users must enroll via the Azure Arc agent setup, have Windows Server 2025 Datacenter evaluation, ensure Virtualization Based Security is enabled, install the KB5040435 July Security update, and connect to Azure Arc.

Microsoft released July 2024 Patch Tuesday updates for Windows 10 and Windows 11, addressing various issues and vulnerabilities. The update for Windows 11 includes a fix for a broken Taskbar. Microsoft also addressed a major issue affecting Windows 10 and 11 users by releasing Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) updates to fix a Secure Boot bypass vulnerability. Users may encounter an error message when attempting to install the WinRE update, and Microsoft has released updates to address this issue. The company emphasized that the WinRE update may not be necessary under certain conditions, such as insufficient free space on the WinRE recovery partition or if the WinRE image is already up to date.
