Windows 11 version 26H2 is rolling out now — here’s how to get the update now and get the most out of the 2026 update

Microsoft is gradually introducing the Windows 11 2026 Update (version 26H2) to compatible devices. The update is optional and requires manual installation for users who want it before the general rollout. Users on versions 25H2 or 24H2 can update without a complete reinstallation, while those on version 23H2 or earlier must perform a full in-place upgrade. To install the update from Settings, users should open Settings, click on Windows Update, enable the toggle for getting the latest updates, check for updates, download and install, and restart the device. If the upgrade option is not visible, it may indicate incompatibility. The Media Creation Tool can be used for creating bootable USB media for users upgrading from older versions like 23H2 or Windows 10, but it requires a complete reinstallation. Steps include downloading the tool, selecting the USB drive option, and following prompts to create the installation media. Users can also download the Windows 11 version 26H2 ISO file from the Microsoft support website, mount the ISO, and run setup.exe to complete the installation.

The developer of an AI-powered driving instruction simulator is spending $1,000 per month just to keep its demo running

Artificial intelligence, particularly through large language models (LLMs), is expected to significantly impact the gaming industry by enhancing non-player characters (NPCs). However, practical implementation has been limited, with few titles like Where Winds Meet exploring this technology. A case study from the developers of Teach My Little Sister How To Drive highlights the financial challenges of integrating LLMs, as daily operational costs have exceeded ,000 due to high player interactions. The developers, Easy Fox, have taken out a bank loan to sustain the demo but are uncertain about its long-term viability. They are considering alternatives like local AI models for players with powerful GPUs, though this would limit accessibility. The game’s reliance on a premium LLM raises questions about its necessity, especially given existing design challenges such as artificial dialogue and misinterpreted commands. The full release of the game is scheduled for January next year.

A practical guide to cost optimization with Lakebase Postgres

Lakebase is a fully managed Postgres database designed for modern application development, featuring an architecture that separates storage and compute with a serverless compute layer. This design allows for cost efficiencies through various mechanisms: 1. **Branching**: Developers can create isolated environments for development, testing, or experimentation without duplicating storage costs, as branches share the same underlying storage. 2. **Autoscaling**: Lakebase adjusts compute resources based on activity levels, allowing users to pay only for the compute they use. It can scale down during low activity and can be suspended entirely after inactivity, reducing costs to zero. 3. **Read Replicas and High Availability**: The separation of storage and compute allows for adding read replicas and high availability without incurring additional storage costs, as these instances utilize the same storage layer. 4. **Synced Tables**: Integration with the Databricks Intelligence Platform enables efficient data syncing, allowing users to sync only the necessary working set of data, which helps avoid unnecessary storage and sync costs. 5. **Sync Modes**: There are three sync modes (Snapshot, Triggered, Continuous) for transferring data from the Lakehouse to Lakebase, each with different cost implications based on data freshness requirements. 6. **Right-sizing Compute**: Users can set the initial compute range during project provisioning to avoid over-provisioning and unnecessary costs. 7. **Monitoring and Metrics**: The Lakebase Metrics dashboard provides insights into working set size and cache utilization, helping users optimize their compute sizing and performance. 8. **Point-in-Time Restore (PITR) and Snapshots**: PITR maintains history for recovery within a configurable window, while snapshots offer discrete recovery points. Both are priced lower than standard storage, making them cost-effective options for data recovery. Lakebase costs are categorized into compute, storage, and serverless pipeline compute for syncing data. Compute is measured by CU usage, while storage includes branch storage, PITR history, and snapshot storage, all tracked separately. Users can access detailed usage and cost information through system billing tables.

DBtune autonomous optimization blows PostgreSQL bottlenecks away

DBtune, a startup based in Malmö/Lund, Sweden, was founded in 2020 by Dr. Luigi Nardi as a spin-off from Stanford University and Lund University. The company focuses on enhancing PostgreSQL's capabilities through autonomous database optimization technology and has raised .4 million in a seed round from various investors in July 2023, with support from the Wallenberg Foundation and Vinnova. DBtune's technology utilizes agentic AI for optimizing PostgreSQL databases by tuning server parameters, optimizing indexes, and monitoring autovacuum processes. The release of DBtune version 4.0 incorporates machine learning and AI to dynamically adjust server parameters and suggest optimal indexing strategies. The platform identifies and ranks potential index opportunities based on workload and provides recommendations for new indexes and maintenance of existing ones. A case study with Midwest Tape demonstrated a 10.8x performance improvement in database query runtime after employing DBtune for performance tuning. Benchmarking tests showed a transaction throughput increase of 87% during initial optimization, with a further 17% improvement on an already optimized system. Disk I/O activity was reduced by 43%, and WAL generation decreased by 23%. Dr. Nardi emphasizes the need for AI-driven optimization to manage the complexities of PostgreSQL databases and rising cloud costs, suggesting that significant code adaptations will be necessary for achieving fully autonomous PostgreSQL.

A Medical Emergency Forced A User To Downgrade From Windows 11 26H2 To Windows 10, But The Matter Is Being Blown Way Out Of Proportion

A user known as “u/Shanaudio” reverted to Windows 10 after experiencing frustration with the Windows 11 26H2 update. Following the update, he faced a family medical emergency and needed to research medical information online. The installation of the built-in Windows language input method took 20 minutes, compared to just 2 minutes on Windows 10. This delay prompted him to downgrade to the older operating system.

Copilot Gets Control of Windows and Your Files as Microsoft’s Recall Bill Comes Due

Microsoft is requesting Windows users to grant its Copilot feature access to their files and activities, following a previous retraction of a similar AI integration due to scrutiny. Copilot can analyze content on the device with user consent, performing tasks like organizing files and troubleshooting, using both local AI models and cloud processing. Microsoft has implemented safeguards, but its security team has raised concerns about potential risks associated with powerful features. The opt-in nature of Copilot places accountability on Microsoft, as users must actively grant access. Hybrid features are set to roll out in the coming months, with taskbar search actions already reaching Windows Insiders. Over 40 percent of new business laptops are being designed as Copilot+ PCs, with the Surface Laptop Ultra scheduled for release on October 16.

Copilot Gets Control of Windows and Your Files as Microsoft’s Recall Bill Comes Due

Microsoft is inviting Windows users to grant its Copilot feature access to their files and activities, with user consent. The new iteration of Copilot can understand content on the device, perform tasks like organizing files, troubleshooting, and writing code, with some tasks processed in the cloud. Activation is opt-in, folder access is limited, and Copilot operates under separate accounts from users. Microsoft has implemented safeguards, including Microsoft Execution Containers to define agent access. However, internal warnings from Microsoft's security team highlight potential risks associated with agents capable of modifying environments. Features for enhancing auditability of agent activities are under development. Microsoft previously faced criticism for its Recall feature, which raised security concerns. The opt-in design places accountability on Microsoft, as users must grant access. The hybrid features require a Copilot+ PC and are set to roll out in the coming months, with taskbar search actions already reaching Windows Insiders. Over 40 percent of newly manufactured business laptops are Copilot+ PCs, with the Surface Laptop Ultra launching on October 16.
