After Samsung Health, the Wearable app could be getting its biggest redesign yet

Samsung is redesigning its Galaxy Wearable app to improve user experience with a new interface and enhanced functionality. The app will transition from a black interface to soft blue and purple gradients, organized into three main sections: Watch Faces, Home, and Settings. The Home tab will display the connected Galaxy Watch's image, battery level, and shortcuts for frequently adjusted settings. The watch face browser will show the entire watch with the selected face for better assessment. The Settings menu will have a refined appearance with simpler icons and reorganized options for quicker access. New features include AI-generated Tiles for personalized information aggregation and a raise-to-talk function for the Gemini voice assistant. Health monitoring upgrades will introduce a Daily Cardio Load feature for training recommendations and a Vitals feature to track overnight health metrics. Additionally, a Sound Exposure feature will monitor daily noise levels, and outdoor-focused tools are being developed for Samsung's rugged Ultra watches.

Circle Generator Minecraft: Build With a Circle Chart

Building a circle in Minecraft involves using a block grid, which can be challenging due to the need for specific block patterns for different diameters. A Minecraft circle graph visually represents a circle on this grid, where filled cells indicate placed blocks and empty cells are unoccupied. The Bresenham circle algorithm is used to create these graphs, making it a standard method for rendering curves in the game. A circle generator allows players to input a desired diameter and receive a grid layout to follow, ensuring accuracy in construction. To read a circle chart, players look at a square grid filled with filled and empty squares, placing blocks according to the layout row by row. For three-dimensional builds, the pattern is replicated across height layers. Odd diameters have a single center block, while even diameters have a 2x2 center, simplifying calculations. Optimal circle sizes for aesthetic results start from 15 blocks, with smaller circles often appearing more octagonal. Recommended diameters include 15-25 blocks for towers, 40-60 blocks for arenas, and starting from 30 blocks for domes. Errors can be corrected by comparing the current row with the generator's output and making adjustments. Large circles, such as those with a 60-block diameter, can strain server resources, making it essential to use a stable server for accurate block placement.

A fully playable browser version of Half-Life 2 has been released, created by developers Slqnt and 98006 in three months. This version includes the entire main campaign and two episodic DLCs, operating natively on devices without cloud streaming. It utilizes WebGL 2 and WebAssembly to run graphics-intensive tasks and translate C++ code into JavaScript. The port features a Source console for accessing developer commands, though it does not support Steam achievements. Testing on various devices showed the best performance on a Windows PC, achieving over 100 FPS. The future of the port depends on Valve's response, and while copyright issues pose challenges, many classic games are available for free online.

Samsung Messages shuts down in favor of Google Messages on July 6 [U]

Samsung has confirmed the closure of its Messages app, which will officially cease operations on July 6. This decision follows the transition to Google Messages as the default texting app on Galaxy devices, starting in 2022. Samsung stopped pre-installing its messaging app on Galaxy phones sold in the U.S. by 2024 and briefly revived it in 2025 before deciding to discontinue it. The closure will primarily affect Galaxy devices running Android 12 or newer, while older models will still have access to Samsung Messages. Users with Galaxy devices on Android 14 or later will be redirected to Google Messages automatically. A poll indicated that many users are hesitant to switch to Google Messages due to their preference for Samsung's app layout and customization options.

Android Auto more widely rolling out updates for Spotify and YouTube Music apps

Windows 11’s Start menu redesign is getting a redesign

Microsoft is redesigning the Windows 11 Start menu in response to user feedback about its size and layout. The new design will utilize native WinUI technology for improved performance and include a Low Latency Profile feature to optimize CPU performance. Key changes will allow users to customize the Start menu with resizing options (Large and Small modes) and the ability to hide specific sections, including the pinned section, apps list, and recommended section. These updates are currently being tested in an Insider build and are expected to be released with Windows 11 26H2 in October.

From monolith to Lakebase to LTAP: rethinking the database from storage up

Sixteen years ago, the author began their PhD at UC Berkeley and was advised to focus on analytics rather than OLTP databases, which were considered solved. This led to the creation of Apache Spark and Databricks. However, during the development of Databricks, it was found that OLTP databases were not solved problems; they were difficult to scale and fragile. This realization led to the development of Lakebase, a serverless Postgres database designed with modern technology. Lakebase architecture separates the write-ahead log (WAL) and data files into independent, scalable services. The WAL is externalized to a service called SafeKeeper, which uses Paxos-based replication for durability, while data files are managed by PageServer, which stores them in cloud object storage. This design addresses challenges such as data loss, scaling, and performance interference between transactional and analytical workloads. Lakebase maintains compatibility with Postgres, offers unlimited storage, serverless compute, durable writes, and simpler high availability. It also introduces LTAP (Lake Transactional/Analytical Processing), which allows both transactional and analytical processing to operate on a single data copy in real time, eliminating the need for separate data copies and reducing costs. LTAP utilizes a unified storage layer that allows data to be materialized in both row and columnar formats, optimizing it for both transactional and analytical workloads. The system ensures that analytics can access the most current data without affecting transactional performance by using a log sequence number (LSN) to retrieve the latest changes. Unlike traditional CDC approaches, LTAP requires no explicit table replication, as all data is stored in a single governed copy. This architecture circumvents common issues faced by hybrid transactional/analytical processing (HTAP) systems, such as incomplete feature sets, lack of ecosystem support, and performance contention. The Lakebase architecture has unlocked capabilities like unlimited storage, elastic compute, durable writes, and instant branching, with ongoing developments anticipated in the future.
