Modern PCs, even with mid-range hardware, can experience performance issues not solely due to hardware limitations but because of how Windows operates. The operating system runs numerous background services that consume resources, including Connected User Experiences and Telemetry, Diagnostic Policy Service, and Windows Error Reporting. These services log activity and send data to Microsoft, leading to unexpected CPU spikes and disk usage. Startup applications, such as Microsoft Teams and OneDrive, also contribute to longer boot times and increased resource usage. Users should monitor and limit these applications to improve startup performance. Legacy features like SysMain, Windows Search indexing, and automatic folder type discovery can hinder performance on modern systems, as they were designed for older hardware and can cause unnecessary disk activity. Microsoft services like Copilot and OneDrive continuously run in the background, consuming memory and CPU resources, which affects overall system performance. Windows' power management settings prioritize energy efficiency over performance, leading to inconsistent responsiveness and delays during tasks. This conservative approach impacts various components, making the system feel sluggish.

Windows 11 version 25H2 is now available for Home and Pro users, rolling out to all non-managed PCs currently on version 24H2. The upgrade will be automatic for eligible users unless there are compatibility issues. Version 24H2 will reach its end of support on October 13, 2026, while version 25H2 will be supported until October 2027. The upgrade process uses a simple enablement package, and most features are accessible to both versions. However, version 25H2 removes certain legacy features like PowerShell 2.0 and WMIC. Users can choose when to restart or postpone the installation, but it becomes mandatory after a pause time limit. Windows 11 version 26H1 is in development and will debut on new devices with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X2 Series processors.

Windows 11 has introduced a dark theme that has received positive feedback, but certain legacy pop-ups, like the Properties tab, still use a light background. Microsoft is working on a dark-themed Properties tab and aims to enhance the dark mode experience across the operating system, as confirmed by senior executive Marcus Ash. He mentioned that there are no specific timelines for updates to legacy tools like the Registry Editor, but improvements are being made for consistency in dark mode across system-level dialogs. Third-party applications that do not adopt dark mode will continue to display in light mode, as Microsoft cannot enforce changes on them. Users currently experience inconsistencies with dark mode, particularly with legacy features that still show a light background. In December 2025, Microsoft rolled out dark mode for most operational dialogs, including those for file deletion and error notifications. Dark mode is now visible in various pop-ups, such as notifications for insufficient disk space and Recycle Bin confirmations. Microsoft is also testing dark mode in Windows Run (legacy).

Microsoft is working on enhancing the dark mode in Windows 11, with Marcus Ash, the head of Windows Design and Research, indicating efforts to expand the dark theme across more areas of the operating system. Improvements are being made to legacy system panels and dialogs to enhance consistency, although no specific timeline for updates, including for Regedit, has been provided. Additionally, Microsoft is responding to user feedback by refining the user experience, which includes plans to improve the file explorer and reintroduce taskbar customization options. Currently, dark mode is only partially integrated, with key features like File Properties in File Explorer, Regedit, and Disk Management lacking support.

File Explorer in Windows 11 has been reported to have performance issues, particularly delays when navigating folders with many media files or documents. This problem is linked to the auto-discovery feature, which optimizes folder display settings based on content but incurs a significant computational burden. Disabling this feature through registry modifications can lead to improved performance, with users experiencing faster navigation and reduced folder load times. Microsoft has acknowledged these issues and plans to preload File Explorer for quicker launches, but the underlying problems remain largely unaddressed. Users have shared their experiences and solutions, including registry tweaks that set folder types to "NotSpecified" to eliminate scanning overhead. Despite some incremental updates from Microsoft, many users still face core lags, prompting ongoing community-driven fixes and discussions about the need for deeper audits of legacy code.

Microsoft has rolled out the Windows 11 annual update, designated as version 25H2. This update is described as an "enablement package," allowing users on version 24H2 to access new features, including a revamped Start menu with a layout change and the option to disable Microsoft's recommendations. These enhancements are also available to users on 24H2, potentially even before those who upgrade to 25H2. The update includes improvements in security features, such as build and runtime vulnerability detection and AI-assisted secure coding. It also removes legacy features like PowerShell 2.0 and the Windows Management Instrumentation command line. Users can enable the 'Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available' setting to position themselves for the update, although compatibility checks may delay rollout for some PCs. Microsoft advises against bypassing the standard update process to avoid complications.
