The City Council will examine Mayor Mamdani's administration's use of a secretive encrypted messaging channel for media relations, which connects nearly 200 social media influencers. This discussion is scheduled for a hearing on September 22. Queens Councilman Phil Wong plans to introduce legislation requiring influencers to label posts for city agency campaigns with a disclaimer stating “Paid for by NYC.” A report revealed that city officials communicated with influencers through a Signal app group titled “NYC Creators Announcements,” sharing updates and multimedia content. Some influencers received payment for their involvement, while others supported the mayor's agenda for personal growth. Concerns have been raised about the Signal chat potentially violating record-keeping regulations due to auto-deletion of messages. The identities of the influencers and details of their contracts remain undisclosed. Wong's proposed bill aims to reveal any undisclosed payments to influencers and raise questions about the integrity of the administration's use of external promoters. Critics argue that the administration's secrecy calls for greater transparency in public relations expenditures.

The game "No 10: Full Confidence" allows players to assume the role of a prime minister, navigating the dynamics of four factions: the cabinet, backbenchers, the media, and the public. Players encounter over 300 political scenarios that require decision-making skills reflective of real-world politics, ranging from policy decisions to crisis management. Each faction plays a crucial role: the cabinet provides essential support, backbenchers influence public opinion and legislation, the media shapes narratives, and the public ultimately holds the power to grant or revoke confidence in the prime minister's leadership. Players must balance these competing interests to maintain their position.

Advertising companies provide software development kits (SDKs) for mobile app monetization, which often automatically transmit users' location data to ad systems and location data brokers, raising privacy concerns. Many developers and users may be unaware of this data sharing. When developers allow SDKs to collect location data, it poses risks beyond targeted ads, including potential misuse by agencies like ICE and global surveillance. Location data brokers harvest precise movements of individuals, often without their consent, through mobile applications. Some apps directly collaborate with data brokers, while others leak data through advertising SDKs during real-time bidding (RTB) auctions. An incident in 2025 revealed that many apps unknowingly contributed to a location data broker's database. Developers must understand their SDKs' location-sharing practices to mitigate risks. Advertising SDKs can collect location data automatically once users grant permission, without specific permissions for the SDKs themselves. Precise location data can be collected when apps have location permissions, leading to potential privacy violations. Several SDKs have been identified as collecting location data by default, increasing the risk of unintentional data leaks. The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) found that four advertising SDKs collect users' location data by default when location permissions are granted. InMobi encourages location sharing for higher revenue, while BidMachine updated its documentation after EFF's inquiry, confirming precise location data collection. Verve's SDK also collects location data by default but presents a cautious narrative in its Play Store guidance. Huawei's SDK recommends obtaining location permissions to enhance revenue, with default location sharing occurring if permissions are granted. Location data can be shared without users' knowledge or meaningful consent, complicating informed consent issues. The focus on four SDKs does not imply that others adequately protect location data, as many have faced criticism for similar practices. Studies indicate that SDKs often encourage increased data collection through design and documentation, leading to minimal control for developers over data transmission. The EFF's analysis highlights that advertising SDKs incentivize location data sharing through default settings and unclear documentation. Developers should assess third-party SDKs and disable unnecessary data collection. Regulators must hold developers accountable for unlawful data sharing, while legislators should enact laws to protect location privacy and address online behavioral advertising, which drives data tracking.

The Labour prime minister of the United Kingdom has stepped down, leading to the anticipated leadership of former Manchester mayor Andy Burnham. A simulation exercise envisions the UK in 2026 under a radical premiership, proposing initiatives like cryptocurrency, subsidized healthy food, and university grants. The legislation of the right to die significantly boosted approval ratings to approximately 43%. A financial crisis led to a state of emergency, allowing for sweeping reforms such as a state postal service and increased NHS funding. The political landscape is divided, with socialists and trade unionists supporting the leadership, while religious conservatives and capitalists oppose it, forming armed factions. The campaign strategy focused on galvanizing the base, resulting in a 70% turnout from supporters and a nationwide turnout of 72%, translating to 30 million votes and 44.7% of the overall vote for the party.

The European Union has sanctioned VK, the Russian technology firm behind VKontakte and its subsidiary MAX, due to their involvement in cyber activities and providing personal data to Russian authorities against dissenters. These sanctions were formalized on July 13 and align with a broader effort involving the UK, targeting individuals and entities linked to Russia's cyber operations. The MAX application is developed under the oversight of Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB). Additionally, Apple's removal of VK applications from its App Store has prompted a response from the Kremlin, with government spokesperson Dmitry Peskov indicating a need for clarification from Apple on this decision.

We Are Social in France has partnered with One Voice to create The Memorial, an immersive experience in Minecraft that raises awareness about the over two million animals used in laboratory testing annually in France. The initiative aims to educate players about the lives of these animals and existing alternatives to animal testing. The Memorial features a landscape with commemorative monuments, educational quests, and real-time tracking of laboratory animals. It highlights the stories of individual animals and introduces scientific alternatives to reduce animal testing. This launch coincides with the European Parliament's recent legislation to ban animal testing for detergents by July 2029 and plans to phase out other animal testing requirements. The Memorial is accessible at le-memorial-des-animaux-de-labo.fr.
