An upcoming Xbox gaming handheld, known as "Project Kennan," is being developed through a collaboration between ASUS and Microsoft. This device will run PC games but will not support exclusive Xbox console titles. Users will have access to a wide range of games through services like Xbox Play Anywhere, Xbox Cloud Gaming, and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. As Windows 11 enforces strict hardware requirements, many PCs will remain on Windows 10, prompting Google to enhance ChromeOS for Microsoft 365 compatibility, potentially attracting users to Chromebooks or allowing them to convert their existing Windows PCs to ChromeOS. Microsoft has integrated Copilot into GroupMe to enhance the messaging experience, aiming to revitalize the app among college students. This announcement coincides with Microsoft's plans to phase out Skype. Microsoft's 50th anniversary event is scheduled for April 4, 2025, where new AI and Copilot announcements are expected, although significant product launches may be unlikely. Epic Games and Qualcomm are collaborating to enhance the Easy Anti-Cheat system for Snapdragon X PCs, improving gaming experiences on these devices. The ASUS ROG Flow Z13 has been reviewed and described as the "Surface Pro on steroids." Windows Central has identified deals, including a bundle with a free Meta Quest 3S and discounts on WWE 2K25 Deadman Edition.

SteamOS is set to be released for all PCs, with expanded hardware support indicated by recent rumors and code changes. Valve announced during CES 2025 that SteamOS will be available to third-party manufacturers, with the Lenovo Legion Go S being the first device to feature it, launching in May 2025. This marks a shift from Valve's previous attempts with Steam Machines. SteamOS is designed as a streamlined Linux alternative for gaming enthusiasts, aiming to compete with Windows by offering a simplified interface. Nvidia's introduction of an ARM chip raises speculation about broader hardware compatibility, potentially including ARM-based devices.

Millions of gamers have access to SteamOS through Steam Deck devices, which may struggle with demanding titles like Half-Life 3 at peak settings. Valve's games typically perform well on lower-end systems. Recent leaks indicate that third-party manufacturers are preparing to launch desktops, laptops, and handhelds with SteamOS, and a more powerful "Steam Deck 2" may be in development. The Lenovo Legion Go S will be the first non-Valve hardware officially "Powered by SteamOS." There is speculation that a timed exclusivity for Half-Life 3 on SteamOS could attract players to the platform, while Valve might also consider offering a non-exclusive version as a pre-installed title with future SteamOS iterations. This situation presents Valve an opportunity to challenge Microsoft's dominance in the PC gaming OS market.

Microsoft will end support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025, meaning users will no longer receive free software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes. Over 40% of users are still on Windows 10, according to Steam’s January 2025 Hardware & Software Survey. The hardware requirements for Windows 11 have deterred many users from upgrading, particularly those with older processors. Operating on an unsupported OS increases risks from malware and viruses due to the lack of security updates. Discussions among gamers suggest a potential interest in alternatives like SteamOS, which Valve plans to expand to more devices, although challenges remain for desktop users.

The Steam Deck operates on Linux, which limits access to certain games and services that require Windows, such as PC Game Pass titles and multiplayer games with anti-cheat software. Users can integrate Windows 11 into their Steam Deck by creating a portable version on a USB-C SSD. Recommended SSD options include the Crucial X6 2 TB SSD or a Genki SavePoint SSD enclosure for M.2 2230-size SSDs. To download Windows 11, users should visit Microsoft's website and select the appropriate ISO file. Creating a bootable drive involves using Rufus to set up the SSD with Windows 11. After downloading Valve's official drivers for the Steam Deck, users can boot into Windows by connecting the SSD and selecting it from the drive selector screen. Adjustments may be needed for display settings, and installing the Steam Deck drivers is recommended for optimal functionality. Once set up, users can access a wider range of PC gaming experiences, including the Xbox app for PC Game Pass titles.

The Xbox app has introduced a "jump back in" feature that allows players to quickly access their recently played games on Windows handheld PCs. This feature is designed for devices like the Lenovo Legion Go and ASUS ROG Ally, enhancing convenience for on-the-go gaming. It provides a quick launch carousel for the last nine games played, reducing navigation through menus. Players can click on any game card to return to gameplay from the game's hub, and controller users can access gameplay directly through a right-click or menu button.

PC Guide's team utilizes independent consumer research, testing, and market analysis to recommend products. Several gaming handhelds, including the ASUS ROG Ally, Lenovo Legion Go, and MSI Claw, compete with the Steam Deck, but Windows 11 is not optimized for gaming compared to SteamOS. Bazzite is a custom Linux alternative designed to replicate the SteamOS experience on Windows handhelds. It is built on a Fedora-based version of Linux and comes pre-installed with Steam. Bazzite aims to provide a user experience similar to the Steam Deck, despite some limitations in native game support. It also supports non-Steam games through Lutris and other platforms. A review by Digital Foundry indicates that Bazzite performs comparably to Windows while reducing shader compilation stutters and slightly improving battery life. Bazzite pre-calculates Vulkan shaders to minimize stutters, unlike Windows, which compiles them on the fly.
