Users can manually add locations or switch to Enhanced mode for broader indexing, though this may result in irrelevant search results and increased resource usage. The new feature aims to streamline the search process by making significant folders searchable automatically while allowing users to block any unwanted folders. Additionally, Microsoft is enhancing Windows Search to better recognize typos and plans to disable Bing search and ads in results. These updates are expected to be rolled out later this year.

Windows 11 is quietly installing OneDrive Photos, another image viewer that nobody asked for

In 2026, Windows 11 users noticed the unexpected addition of OneDrive Photos to the Start menu, a photo viewer and editor installed through a Windows Update or an update to the OneDrive sync client. OneDrive Photos is integrated into the existing OneDrive installation and operates via the executable file located at C:Program FilesMicrosoft OneDriveOneDrive.App.exe. It can scan local files for photos without requiring a Microsoft account and offers functionalities similar to the Microsoft Photos app. Users cannot remove OneDrive Photos independently from OneDrive, and to prevent its installation, OneDrive must be uninstalled entirely. The app includes features like AI-driven cloud search, Optical Character Recognition (OCR), and a People section for organizing faces in images, with privacy assurances regarding facial data.

Windows 11 – The system restore that also includes your files

Since June 23, Microsoft has been implementing a point-in-time restore feature on Windows 11, which is enabled by default for Home and Pro editions when the system drive exceeds 200 GB. This feature captures a complete snapshot of the machine approximately every 24 hours using the Volume Shadow Copy service, including system, applications, settings, and local files. Users can revert to a previous state in case of issues, but restoring from a snapshot older than 48 hours will erase all changes made since then, except for OneDrive data. The feature retains snapshots for up to 72 hours and reserves 2% of drive space, capped at 50 GB. If free space drops below 20 GB, older snapshots are deleted. Restoration occurs locally through WinRE, and users need a BitLocker recovery key if the drive is encrypted. After a restore, the feature pauses and requires user consent to resume. Snapshots from upgraded editions are not accessible, and only the Enterprise edition allows adjustments to snapshot settings. The feature can be disabled in system settings. It is not a backup solution, and users are advised to maintain separate backups for important files.

Support for two-character file searches has been introduced, and reliability fixes have been implemented to address crashes and loading issues. Windows 11 finally gets an undo button for your entire PC

Microsoft unveiled its July 2026 Patch Tuesday update, identified as KB5101650, for Windows 11 versions 25H2 and 24H2. The update introduces the Point-in-Time Restore (PITR) feature, allowing users to take full backups and create snapshots every 4 to 24 hours, with snapshots retained for a maximum of 72 hours. PITR can restore local files and applications. Users can now pause Windows updates for up to 35 days. Other enhancements include discreet widget operation, optimized taskbar notifications, faster File Explorer startup, quicker disk image mounting, improved Bluetooth functionality, reduced eye strain through screen tinting, and enhancements in voice control and input capabilities. Not all features will be available immediately after installation, with security-related improvements being deployed universally.

New Windows 11 Cloud Recovery Restores PCs And Drivers Without A USB Drive
