Swarmer Tool Evading EDR With a Stealthy Modification on Windows Registry for Persistence

Praetorian Inc. has launched Swarmer, a tool that enables low-privilege attackers to maintain stealthy persistence in the Windows registry while avoiding detection by Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) systems. Swarmer uses mandatory user profiles and the Offline Registry API to modify the NTUSER hive without triggering standard registry hooks. It operates by creating an NTUSER.MAN file that replaces the NTUSER.DAT hive upon user login, allowing low-privilege users to manipulate registry settings without alerting EDR tools. Swarmer employs functions from Microsoft’s Offline Registry Library, enabling it to perform operations without invoking Reg* API calls, thus evading detection mechanisms. Swarmer's workflow involves exporting the HKCU registry, modifying it, and executing the tool with specific commands to place the modified NTUSER.MAN file into the user profile. It can be used as an executable or a PowerShell module. While it presents a novel method for persistence, Swarmer has limitations, such as being unable to update without admin access and requiring user login to activate. Detection strategies include monitoring for NTUSER.MAN file creation and Offreg.dll usage in non-standard processes.

India Orders Messaging Apps to Work Only With Active SIM Cards to Prevent Fraud and Misuse

India's Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has mandated that app-based communication service providers implement measures requiring an active SIM card linked to the user's mobile number. This applies to messaging applications such as WhatsApp, Telegram, and Signal, which must comply within 90 days. The amendment to the Telecommunications (Telecom Cyber Security) Rules, 2024, aims to mitigate the misuse of telecommunication identifiers exploited for phishing and scams. The directive requires continuous linkage to the SIM card, and web service instances will log out every six hours, necessitating re-linking via QR code. This is intended to reduce account takeover risks and ensure that accounts are linked to KYC-verified SIMs. The DoT also announced a Mobile Number Validation (MNV) platform to combat identity fraud related to unverified mobile number associations.

WhatsApp may soon let you take a break without deleting your account (APK teardown)

WhatsApp is set to introduce a new "Logout" feature in its beta release (version 2.25.17.37), allowing users to log out of their accounts on their primary phones without deleting their accounts. This feature will be found in the app's Account settings and will offer two options: one that logs users out while keeping all data and preferences intact, and another that erases all data, similar to uninstalling the app. The "Logout" feature is currently marked as "Internal," indicating it is still under testing.
