Silver Fox uses adware to distribute ValleyRAT backdoor

The cyber threat group Silver Fox is distributing the ValleyRAT backdoor disguised as a legitimate signed Chinese adware application, specifically bundled with the QN Wallpaper tool. This malware allows attackers to gain comprehensive control over infected machines, enabling them to collect sensitive information, capture screenshots, and deploy additional malicious modules. The attack utilizes DLL sideloading, where a modified version of QN Wallpaper loads a malicious DLL from the same directory, circumventing signature-based security measures. The installer disables Windows Defender, adds itself to autorun entries, and uses the "runas" command to elevate privileges if the user lacks administrator rights. ValleyRAT also marks its process as critical, potentially causing a blue screen of death if terminated. Kaspersky has identified Silver Fox as the likely perpetrator of this campaign, known for similar techniques.

Google’s Android Sideloading Rules Take Shape: Installation Won’t Be Blocked, but Apps from Unverified Developers Will Be Intercepted

Play Store Catalog Interoperability Goes Live July 22: Android Developers Must Decide

On July 22, 2026, Google Play will launch its Play Catalog Access program, allowing third-party Android stores in the U.S. to access app listings from the Google Play Store, including names, icons, descriptions, screenshots, and metadata. Developers will be automatically enrolled unless they opt out by the deadline. The program enables these stores to showcase app listings while downloads will still occur through Google Play Console, ensuring Google’s service fee applies. All downloaded apps will undergo Play Protect scanning, and enrolled stores must prevent malware distribution, maintaining a malware installation-attempt rate below one percent. A December 2023 jury verdict found that Google violated federal and California antitrust laws, leading to a Ninth Circuit decision that requires Google to grant third-party app stores access to its catalog, dismantling barriers to competition. The legal battle began in August 2020 when Epic Games sought changes to counter Google's monopolistic practices. A March 2026 settlement introduced a tiered service fee structure, reducing costs for developers from a flat 30 percent commission to 20 percent for new installs and 10 percent for subscriptions. Developers can choose to publish all listings to all enrolled stores, manage stores individually, or opt out entirely. If no action is taken before July 22, Google will automatically share the app's listing with all enrolled third-party stores. The Play Catalog Access program aims to address the cold-start problem faced by alternative stores but does not guarantee a competitive ecosystem, as third-party stores must still create compelling user experiences to attract customers.

New Millenium RAT version infects 62,000 Windows systems worldwide

A significant evolution of the Millenium remote access trojan (RAT) has impacted over 62,000 Windows devices across more than 160 countries. The latest version, 4.*, marks a departure from previous .NET-based versions and is attributed to a threat cluster known as Y2K Operators, with the creator identified as “ShinyEnigma.” There are 62,289 infected endpoints, with 39,730 infections occurring in the first quarter of 2026. The RAT is marketed as malware-as-a-service (MaaS) and promoted through underground forums and platforms like GitHub, with accessible pricing. Millenium RAT 4 is developed in native C++ and uses the Telegram Bot API for command-and-control communications. Its capabilities include stealing browser data, collecting system information, logging keystrokes, capturing screenshots and audio, accessing Telegram and Discord data, downloading additional payloads, and executing Windows or PowerShell commands. The malware ensures persistence by replicating itself in the %APPDATA% directory and creating an autorun registry entry. The malware is distributed through social engineering tactics such as cracked software, cryptocurrency utilities, hacking toolkits, OSINT tools, exploit builders, and Roblox-related cheats. Some campaigns have trojanized malware builders, infecting cybercriminals. One campaign used PDF-themed lures with a malicious Windows shortcut to download the RAT while displaying a legitimate document. Payloads often use filenames associated with Windows components or security software to blend into infected systems. Group-IB recommends avoiding untrusted executables, applying security updates, enabling multi-factor authentication, and monitoring for unusual autorun registry entries.
