Judge James Boasberg ruled that Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, does not have an illegal monopoly in the social media market. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) failed to prove that Meta currently holds monopoly power, despite its past dominance. The emergence of competitors like TikTok and YouTube has created significant competition for Meta. The judge noted that consumers are increasingly spending time on these alternative platforms, which contributes to Meta's need to invest heavily to stay relevant. This ruling is part of a broader trend among major tech companies successfully navigating antitrust challenges in rapidly changing markets.

WhatsApp has announced the introduction of advertisements in its "Updates" tab, which is used by approximately 1.5 billion daily users. Personal chats will remain free from ads, and the platform assures that end-to-end encryption will protect private conversations from being used for advertising purposes. This shift marks a departure from WhatsApp's previous ad-free policy, originally upheld by its founders. Meta, WhatsApp's parent company, is looking to monetize the app, which has over 2.5 billion users, while maintaining user trust and privacy. Advertisements will be targeted using limited user information, and two additional revenue-generating features have been introduced: paid subscriptions for Channels and promoted channels. Meta reported total revenue of 4.5 billion in 2025, with .6 billion coming from advertising across its platforms. Analysts suggest the introduction of ads could impact user experience, with the potential to alienate users who value WhatsApp's simplicity and ad-free environment. Meta plans to monitor user feedback as it rolls out the advertising initiative.

Windows has replaced the Blue Screen of Death with a new Black Screen of Death. This change marks a significant shift in error screens that began with Windows 1.0 in 1985. The update follows the CrowdStrike outage that affected 8.5 million Windows devices and led to the introduction of the Windows Resiliency Initiative, aimed at enhancing security and reducing disruptions from unexpected restarts. The new Black Screen of Death features a "simplified UI" and includes a quick machine recovery feature to help PCs regain functionality faster after unsuccessful restarts.

Meta Platforms is rolling out direct messaging on its Threads app, starting in select markets like Hong Kong and Thailand, to boost user engagement. The feature will not be encrypted initially. Threads, launched in 2023, has over 350 million monthly active users but is not expected to significantly drive revenue growth by 2025. eMarketer projects a 17.5 percent increase in U.S. monthly active users for Threads, reaching 60.5 million, while X is expected to decline by 14.4 percent to about 50 million users.

On Friday afternoon, WhatsApp experienced a disruption affecting users' ability to send messages, with Downdetector reporting over 50,000 incidents shortly after 15:30 GMT. A WhatsApp spokesperson confirmed the issue was resolved. While some users reported problems with Facebook and Facebook Messenger, the complaints were significantly lower than those for WhatsApp. WhatsApp, which has nearly three billion users, was previously affected by a mass global outage in December. CEO Mark Zuckerberg expressed optimism about the company's growth during a recent investor call. The recent issues were not as severe as the 2021 outage that lasted nearly six hours.
