Microsoft Defender RoguePlanet Zero-Day Grants SYSTEM Access on Updated Windows

An anonymous researcher known as Chaotic Eclipse has released a proof-of-concept exploit called RoguePlanet, targeting a zero-day vulnerability in Microsoft Defender. The exploit, which is a race condition, has a variable success rate, achieving 100% success on some machines while being less effective on others. When successful, it grants attackers SYSTEM-level privileges on Windows 10 and 11 systems with the June 2026 Patch Tuesday updates. The exploit does not work on Windows Server due to restrictions on mounting ISO images. Chaotic Eclipse has criticized Microsoft's defenses against path redirection attacks and claims to have found multiple vulnerabilities within Defender and other Microsoft software components. The researcher has expressed dissatisfaction with Microsoft's handling of vulnerability disclosures, particularly after losing access to the Microsoft Security Response Center account. MiniPlasma Windows 0-Day Enables SYSTEM Privilege Escalation on Fully Patched Systems

Chaotic Eclipse has unveiled a proof-of-concept (PoC) for a Windows privilege escalation zero-day vulnerability, codenamed MiniPlasma, which targets the "cldflt.sys" component and could grant SYSTEM privileges on fully patched Windows systems. This vulnerability was initially reported to Microsoft by James Forshaw from Google Project Zero in September 2020. Although Microsoft was believed to have resolved it in December 2020 as part of CVE-2020-17103, further analysis indicates that the flaw remains unaddressed. Chaotic Eclipse demonstrated that the original PoC could still spawn a SYSTEM shell reliably on his machines. The vulnerability is believed to affect all versions of Windows, with confirmation that MiniPlasma opens a "cmd.exe" prompt with SYSTEM privileges on Windows 11 systems with the latest May 2026 updates, though it does not function on the latest Insider Preview Canary version. In December 2025, Microsoft addressed a separate privilege escalation flaw in the same component, identified as CVE-2025-62221, which had a CVSS score of 7.8 and was reportedly being exploited by threat actors.

On April 2, 2026, a security researcher named Chaotic Eclipse announced a zero-day Windows exploit called BlueHammer, which allows attackers to gain SYSTEM privileges. Will Dormann, a principal vulnerability analyst, confirmed the exploit's functionality. Chaotic Eclipse criticized the Microsoft Security Response Center (MSRC) for its perceived incompetence, suggesting that prior attempts to resolve the issue privately were ignored. Dormann indicated that budget cuts at Microsoft may have led to a decline in the quality of the MSRC. BlueHammer was neutralized in the Windows 11 CVE-2026-33825 update released on April 14, 2026, but some components may still exist.
