I tried the new Google Photos Android app redesign, and now I want it in every Google app

Google has started rolling out a design update for the Google Photos app on Android, changing the navigation bar from a ribbon-style format to a floating pill shape. This new design includes a circular button for search functionality and offers a more intuitive user experience. The navigation bar remains fixed during scrolling, allowing for more screen space and reducing confusion. Users can access three main views: Photos, Collections, and Create. While this update enhances the app's aesthetic and functionality, it diverges from Google's Material 3 Expressive guidelines regarding the recommended number of in-app destinations. Other Google applications still use the older ribbon-style design.

LineageOS announces browser flashing, Android 17 plans, and new supported devices

LineageOS has released its "Summertime updates," introducing a new browser-based flashing tool for installing LineageOS directly from web browsers, supporting Fastboot, ADB, and Samsung’s Odin protocol. The Updater app has been redesigned with a Material 3 aesthetic and now displays the Android Security Bulletin (ASB) level for each update. The update process has been optimized to stream A/B OTA packages by default. LineageOS has adapted to Google’s Android 16 security patching model, focusing on quarterly releases while continuing to test and integrate monthly security patches. Development on LineageOS 24 has begun following the release of Android 17. The default Gallery app has been enhanced with features like Motion Photos and improved video playback, while other applications such as Seedvault, Etar Calendar, and the Twelve music player have also been updated. The update expands LineageOS support to new devices from Samsung, Motorola, Sony, and Xiaomi, with a full compatibility list available in the official announcement.

Android Auto more widely rolling out updates for Spotify and YouTube Music apps

Android Auto is rolling out updates for its media applications, including a redesigned Spotify music player that features a visually appealing layout with blurred album art, a Material 3 Expressive tracking bar, and a more intuitive button arrangement. This redesign, which started appearing in January, is now more widely available. Other apps like YouTube Music and Pocket Casts are also expected to receive similar design enhancements. YouTube Music has introduced a more prominent “Thumbs Down” icon for easier management of listening preferences, but some users have reported an issue with the “Library” tab disappearing, which can be resolved by resetting the app.

Google rolling out per-app controls for Android Backups

Google has introduced per-app backup controls for Android devices, enhancing user experience. For Pixel users, the backup settings can be accessed through Settings > Accounts and backup > Google Backup > Other device data, now featuring a structured “App data” section that highlights the top three apps and their backed-up data. Users can toggle backup options off for individual apps, with notifications explaining the implications of disabling backups. These controls do not apply to the Device data section, which includes SMS, call history, and device settings. The rollout is confirmed for Pixel devices on stable Android versions 16 and 17 with Google Play services version 26.24, while Samsung users have not yet received these controls. Additionally, Google One for Android has been visually updated to an edge-to-edge design.

MAUI is Getting Android Material 3 Support in .NET 10

.NET MAUI is introducing Material 3 support for Android applications, allowing developers to integrate the latest design aesthetics with a single MSBuild property. Material 3, also known as Material You, includes features such as dynamic color schemes, refreshed control shapes, and enhanced customization. Developers currently using MAUI have been working with Material Design 2, but with the upcoming release of .NET 10 in November, they can easily upgrade to Material 3 by updating their app projects and adding a few lines of XAML code. Microsoft has provided a sample Material 3-styled app that demonstrates the new design elements across various controls, including SearchBar, Entry, DatePicker, Picker, Slider, ProgressBar, RadioButton, CheckBox, Switch, Button, and ImageButton. This sample supports both dark and light themes. Microsoft plans to expand Material 3 support to additional controls and aims to make it the default styling for MAUI applications.

Android Auto to get a major design change, widgets, better music apps

At the Google I/O 2026 event, Google introduced an updated version of Android Auto, featuring a new design that adapts to various display sizes and supports widgets. The interface will utilize the Material 3 Expressive design, allowing personalized fonts and wallpapers from Galaxy phones. A floating app row will be positioned based on the steering wheel's location, and the interface will overlay Google Maps for integrated navigation. The updated Android Auto can display air conditioning controls if supported by the vehicle and allows users to place widgets like Clock, Contacts, Google Home, Photos, and Weather on the infotainment screen. It will also support video streaming from platforms like YouTube when parked, with Full HD resolution and up to 60fps. This feature will be available in select vehicles from manufacturers including BMW, Ford, Genesis, Hyundai, Kia, Mahindra, Mercedes-Benz, Renault, Škoda, Tata, and Volvo.
