A new malware campaign targets Windows users by using a fraudulent clone of a Microsoft website to steal sensitive information. Victims are directed to a typo-squatted web address that resembles an official site, where they are prompted to download a file named WindowsUpdate 1.0.0.msi. This file uses a legitimate open-source installer framework and incorporates Electron, JavaScript, and Python, making it difficult to detect; VirusTotal showed zero detections across 69 engines. The malware maintains persistence by modifying the Windows registry and placing a shortcut named Spotify.lnk in the startup folder. Currently, the campaign primarily targets French-speaking users, but similar tactics may spread to other regions. Users are advised to apply updates only through the Windows Update feature in the Settings menu.

Microsoft has released new test builds for Windows Insiders, specifically Dev Build 26300.8170 and Beta Build 26220.8165, which remove the 32GB limit on FAT32 formatting for external drives. Users can now format external drives up to 2TB using FAT32 through the Command Prompt. This change, which has been anticipated by users, is a shift from the long-standing restriction that required third-party applications or specialized commands for larger drives. The enhancement applies only to the Command Prompt, as the graphical interface remains unchanged, and the 4GB file size limit for individual files on FAT32 drives still applies. This feature is currently available only in preview versions for Windows Insiders, with a broader rollout planned for future standard Windows 11 updates.

Microsoft has discontinued the last method for activating Windows 10 or Windows 11 without an Internet connection, specifically the telephone activation option. Users have reported confusion and frustration as the option remained visible in Windows, but attempts to use it led to redirection to online portals. Microsoft has not fully disclosed the reasons for this change, but it aligns with a shift towards digital solutions and emphasizes the importance of Internet connectivity in software management.

Meta is testing 49 chat themes for WhatsApp Web, introducing customization options for the desktop interface. The themes will change not only the background but also the color of message bubbles. These custom themes will be local to each user, meaning that the design choices will not be visible to others. There is no official release date for this feature, and it has not yet appeared in beta versions. Users are advised to check the Settings menu under the Theme section for updates.

Microsoft announced a plan to enhance Windows 11 to improve performance, stability, and usability, addressing user concerns amid scrutiny of the operating system's reputation. Historically, Microsoft has faced challenges with previous Windows versions, such as Windows Vista and Windows 8, which received mixed responses despite some improvements in subsequent updates. Windows 7 was well-received due to refinements based on user feedback. Windows 10 successfully merged elements from earlier versions, but Windows 11 has garnered a mixed response. Microsoft is focusing on enhancing Windows 11 rather than launching a new version, like Windows 12, to avoid disrupting user consolidation and maintain stability, especially for enterprises. Users can continue using Windows 11 for the life of their device without being forced to upgrade. The timing of new version releases is critical due to hardware alignment and enterprise upgrade challenges. Some believe that a new version could signify a renewed commitment to the platform, but the decision remains a topic of discussion.

Major tech companies, including Microsoft, are integrating artificial intelligence into their products. Microsoft has embedded its AI tool, Copilot, into various applications but is now retracting it from some, including Notepad, due to user backlash. Users have expressed dissatisfaction with Copilot's integration, leading to a petition against its use in basic applications. In response, Microsoft plans to reduce unnecessary Copilot integrations while maintaining some AI functionalities through a new Writing Tools menu. Users can also disable AI features in applications like Notepad by adjusting settings.

Microsoft is piloting a feature that allows users to select a specific date for pausing updates in Windows 11, moving away from the previous system that allowed pauses of up to five weeks. Users can access this feature through Settings > Windows Update, where they can choose to pause updates for a specific date using a calendar flyout. Currently, Windows 11 typically receives updates at least twice a month, with additional updates as needed. Users of Windows 11 Pro or Enterprise can defer updates for extended periods, potentially up to a year. The new pause controls are still in development, and while the upper limits for pause duration are unclear, there may be a cap similar to the Group Policy limit of one year. Microsoft is also working on streamlining the installation process for large updates and enhancing user control over third-party drivers.
