Meta is discontinuing its standalone Messenger desktop applications for Windows and Mac, with the shutdown scheduled for December 15. Users will be redirected to the Facebook website to access Messenger after this date. In-app notifications will inform users about the transition, and Mac users will have a 60-day grace period to continue using the app post-notification. Meta encourages users to delete the application, as it will no longer be usable after the grace period. For Windows users, the Facebook desktop application is recommended as a substitute, and both platforms can use the web interface on Facebook. To preserve chat history, Meta advises users to enable secure storage and set up a Personal Identification Number (PIN).

OpenAI Inc. is launching its generative AI platform, GPT-5, on KakaoTalk starting in October. This was announced by Kakao Corp. CEO Chung Shina at the company's annual developers conference. The integration of GPT-5 into KakaoTalk is the first result of the partnership between Kakao and OpenAI established in February. A new ChatGPT tab will be added to the KakaoTalk interface, allowing approximately 50 million users to access OpenAI’s model without a separate download. Users will be able to process and generate text and images for sharing within chatrooms. Kakao also plans to launch Kakao Agent, an AI-powered assistant that connects users to various services in its ecosystem, including gift sending, Kakao Map, reservations, and music streaming. Kakao has created PlayMCP, a platform for developers to create AI service tools. South Korea has the highest number of paid ChatGPT users outside the U.S.

Kakao is integrating OpenAI's ChatGPT into its KakaoTalk messenger app, starting in October, allowing users to access the AI directly within the chat tab without a separate app. This integration aims to enhance user experience by connecting various Kakao services like reservations and music streaming in a conversational format. The initiative is part of a broader digital strategy to improve user engagement and create new monetization options amid declining user activity. KakaoTalk has around 49.1 million monthly active users but faces competition from platforms like YouTube and Instagram. The company seeks to unify services under an intelligent assistant framework, although there are concerns about alienating older users with significant interface changes. Analysts suggest that merely adding AI may not be enough to reverse engagement declines; Kakao needs to offer innovative experiences beyond messaging to attract a wider audience.

On June 10, the Russian Parliament passed legislation to establish a new messenger application called Max, developed by VK, aimed at integrating state services. Minister of Digital Development Maksut Shadayev announced that VK has created a "fully Russian messenger" that matches or exceeds foreign counterparts. The app will enable users to utilize electronic signatures for document signing, verify identity, age, and eligibility for benefits, and will be required for educational services and communication in schools. It may shift user behavior away from popular Western apps like WhatsApp and Telegram. The app is compared to China's WeChat, offering messaging, social networking, search, and payment systems. Concerns exist that it may mirror WeChat's issues with censorship and surveillance, especially given VK's past collaborations with Russian authorities.
