Everything new in Minecraft Bedrock 26.30.25/26 beta and preview

Windows finally fixed File Explorer’s most annoying quirk, and it only took 20 years

This update eliminates the need for registry tweaks. Additionally, the updates enhance File Explorer's speed and performance, resolve a white flash issue in dark mode, introduce a "preview anyway" button for the preview pane, and add support for four new archive formats. These changes are currently available in the Release Preview channel and will soon be rolled out to regular users.

Google releases experimental ‘COSMO’ AI assistant app on Play Store

Google released an experimental AI assistant application called COSMO for Android devices, which has since been removed from the Play Store due to an accidental launch. The app, which is 1.13 GB in size, was designed to enhance daily productivity by organizing schedules and answering complex queries. COSMO features include a list tracker, document writer, calendar event suggester, browser agent, timer suggestions, deep research capabilities, quick photo lookup, web search functionality, jargon definitions, insights provision, context understanding for people and events, recall assistance, and conversation summarization. It offers three settings: Hybrid, PI Only, and Nano Only, with the latter two indicating different processing methods. Subnautica 2 dev confirms there’s no gen AI “at all” in its survival sequel

The development of Subnautica 2 faced challenges between Unknown Worlds and its publisher, Krafton, but these issues have been resolved. The game is set to release in two weeks, and Scott MacDonald, Creative Media Producer at Unknown Worlds, confirmed that no generative AI was used in its development. He stated that the studio opted for traditional development methods, with all work being done by human programmers. Design Lead Anthony Gallegos noted that Krafton recognizes that mandating AI tools could disrupt the development process. Following a legal ruling reinstating Unknown Worlds president Ted Gill, Krafton is committed to supporting the game's Early Access launch.

LofyStealer Targets Minecraft Players via Node.js Loader and Browser Injection

Minecraft players are being targeted by a deceptive hacking tool called “Slinky,” which is actually an infostealer known as LofyStealer linked to the Brazilian cybercrime group LofyGang. The malware uses a Node.js-based loader and a C++ payload to extract sensitive browser data, disguising itself as a Minecraft hack. It primarily targets younger players who may unknowingly execute it. The malware operates through a two-stage architecture, with a 53.5 MB loader binary that injects a smaller 1.4 MB payload into browser processes, bypassing detection methods. It collects sensitive information such as cookies, passwords, and credit card details, compressing and encoding the data for exfiltration. The command-and-control (C2) infrastructure is hosted in Brazil, and the malware's design reflects advanced compilation techniques. The campaign is attributed to LofyGang, which has evolved into a more professional entity, posing severe risks to players who download cheats and cracked tools. Indicators of compromise include a specific C2 IP address and associated endpoints.

Minecraft Players Targeted by LofyStealer Using Node.js Loader and In-Memory Browser Injection

A new infostealer malware called LofyStealer is targeting the gaming community, particularly Minecraft players, by disguising itself as a cheat tool named “Slinky.” It employs a two-stage attack to extract sensitive information from eight major web browsers, including Chrome and Firefox, while evading detection by security software. The malware siphons off cookies, saved passwords, payment card information, and session tokens. Researchers at Zenox.ai identified LofyStealer, linking it to the Brazilian cybercrime group LofyGang, which has been active since October 2022. The malware uses social engineering tactics to appear legitimate and operates as a Malware-as-a-Service platform, offering both Free and Premium tiers to buyers. Its technical sophistication is evident in its method of in-memory browser injection, which allows it to bypass security defenses. The stolen data is compressed and sent to a command-and-control server. Users are advised to avoid downloading unofficial game mods and enable multi-factor authentication to reduce the risk of credential theft. Security teams should monitor for specific behavioral indicators related to the malware's operations.

Windows 11 April Patches Trigger Remote Desktop Bug

Microsoft engineer says native apps are back, and it could finally revive Windows 11’s fight against web apps

The Windows Store, currently dominated by web apps, has improved significantly in performance and offers a diverse array of applications. However, this shift has led to high resource consumption issues, with WhatsApp consuming up to 600MB of RAM and Electron-based applications like Discord using as much as 4GB of RAM. Users have expressed dissatisfaction with PWAs lacking essential functionalities compared to native apps. In response to feedback, Microsoft plans to develop 100% native apps for Windows 11, with Rudy Huyn confirming this intention. David Fowler declared, “Native apps are back,” indicating a focus on restoring native applications. The Start menu is transitioning from React-based elements to WinUI to enhance performance. The recently launched .NET 10 introduces Native AOT compilation, which aims to decrease app startup times and optimize memory usage. Microsoft's web-based Copilot app has also faced criticism for high resource consumption. The company must persuade developers to prioritize native app creation and demonstrate the advantages of native apps by converting its own applications to be fully native on Windows 11.
