Exclusive: How One Line of Code Put Billions of Microsoft Android App Downloads at Risk

A significant security vulnerability has been found in six Microsoft 365 Android applications, including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Microsoft 365 Copilot, Microsoft Loop, and OneNote, due to an active debug flag left in the production code. This oversight allowed untrusted apps to request and receive access tokens, compromising user account security. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by embedding malicious code in a widely distributed app, enabling unauthorized access to sensitive information such as emails, documents, and communications. Microsoft confirmed the issues and issued CVE numbers CVE-2026-41100, -41101, and -41102, releasing patches through their Patch Tuesday mechanism and a specific patched build on the Google Play Store. Two laptops, the Surface Laptop 7 (Windows 11 Pro) and the HP OmniBook 5 (Windows 11 Home), were reset using the "Reset this PC" feature for a clean setup. A local account can be created during the Out of Box Experience (OOBE) by bypassing the online requirement. After connecting to Wi-Fi, updates were installed, and account security was enhanced by adding a password, PIN, and facial recognition. For Windows 11 Pro users, BitLocker can be enabled for disk encryption, while Windows 11 Home users may need to upgrade to Pro for this feature. Unnecessary Microsoft applications, such as OneDrive, OneNote, and Microsoft 365, were uninstalled, and the Start menu was cleaned up. Preferred applications were installed using web-based methods and the Windows Package Manager (winget). A preferred web browser was set as the default, and measures were taken to prevent Microsoft Edge from launching unexpectedly. Microsoft releases Windows 10 KB5082200 extended security update

Microsoft has released the Windows 10 KB5082200 extended security update, addressing vulnerabilities from the April 2026 Patch Tuesday, including two critical zero-day flaws. The update enhances security with new protections against phishing attacks using Remote Desktop Protocol (.rdp) files and provides updated indicators in Windows Security for new Secure Boot certificates. Users can install the update by checking for updates in the Windows Update settings. After installation, Windows 10 will upgrade to build 19045.7184, and Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2021 will transition to build 19044.7184. Android 16 beta continues to crash popular work apps, and Google has no fix yet
