What building an Android weather app taught me about designing for reliability

After 13 years of developing Android applications, the author created Weather Pal, a weather forecasting app that highlighted the importance of data management in mobile applications. Two incidents underscored this lesson: one where the operating system stopped refreshing data and another involving unauthorized scripts that depleted the data quota without triggering error notifications. Weather Pal is built using Kotlin and Jetpack Compose, providing hourly and daily forecasts, AQI data, radar imagery, and weather alerts, with data sourced from Open-Meteo and MET Norway, and alerts from the National Weather Service API. To enhance privacy, all requests are routed through the author's gateway, and location data is transmitted with city-block precision. A widget feature, designed to refresh periodically, failed to update due to the app being placed in App Standby mode, resulting in outdated information being displayed.

How we found 24 Android vulnerabilities using our open source AI security agent
