Start

The Start interface in Windows 11 is a centered floating window that can be accessed by clicking the Start button or using keyboard shortcuts like WINKEY or Ctrl + Esc. Key features include a Search box for initiating searches, a customizable Pinned section for frequently used apps, a Recommended area for recently accessed items, and an All section displaying all installed apps. Users can manage their account through the Account manager, access power options for Lock, Sleep, Shutdown, and Restart, and connect mobile devices via the Phone Link app. Customization options for the Start interface include moving the Start and Taskbar icons to the left, configuring Windows Search settings, and customizing the Pinned and Recommended sections. Users can pin, unpin, and rearrange app shortcuts in the Pinned section, adjust what appears in the Recommended section, and choose between different layout views in the All section. Microsoft 365 Android Apps Let Any App Steal Account Tokens via Leftover Debug Flag

A vulnerability in several Microsoft 365 Android applications, identified as FlagLeft, was caused by a development flag left enabled in production builds, which disabled checks meant to restrict account-token sharing to trusted applications. This flaw affected applications such as Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Microsoft 365 Copilot, Microsoft Loop, and OneNote, allowing unauthorized apps to request and obtain user tokens without permission. Microsoft Teams was unaffected. The vulnerability was demonstrated by Enclave, allowing access to user emails through an unverified app. On May 12, Microsoft issued four CVEs for the affected applications, categorized under improper access control. The patched version of Word for Android is 16.0.19822.20190, and users are advised to update their applications. The patch does not invalidate already compromised tokens, so users should revoke these tokens and sign in again.

ADCS Now Generates Post-Quantum Certificates For Windows

Active Directory Certificate Services (ADCS) now supports the generation of post-quantum certificates, enhancing quantum-safe cryptography within Windows' secure connection protocols. Microsoft has integrated PQ TLS hybrid key exchange into the Windows Transport Layer Security (TLS) stack, providing protection against "Harvest Now, Decrypt Later" attacks. The PQ TLS hybrid key exchange combines traditional cryptographic methods with the NIST ML-KEM algorithm, offering three hybrid combinations: X25519MLKEM768, SecP256r1MLKEM768, and SecP384r1_MLKEM1024. This feature is available in preview via the Windows Insider Program and will be rolled out to Windows 11 and Windows Server. Additionally, Windows cryptography APIs now support composite ML-KEM and ML-DSA algorithms, which are NIST-approved standards for key exchange and digital signatures, enhancing security by requiring multiple components to be compromised. Microsoft emphasizes the importance of establishing new Certification Authorities (CAs) for implementing post-quantum certificate issuance, as existing CAs cannot be upgraded. The introduction of ML-DSA support within ADCS allows organizations to counter HNDL risks associated with long-lived data. Organizations are encouraged to inventory their use of public-key cryptography, prioritize systems protecting sensitive data, and test hybrid and composite approaches in non-production environments to facilitate a smooth transition to quantum-safe cryptography.
