Google has been managing the Play Store for over a decade, focusing on the safety and functionality of Android apps. Recently, the company introduced new badges in the Play Store to signify official government applications and trustworthy VPN services, with plans to expand these badges to other app categories. In response to the vulnerability of financial services apps to cyber threats, Google launched a program in Singapore to automatically block sideloaded apps that may indicate financial fraud, with plans to expand this measure to more markets. Additionally, Google is simplifying the app submission process for developers by enhancing education on policy updates and implementing more pre-review checks.

As of August 20, 2025, support for the Amazon Appstore on third-party Android devices will end. Applications downloaded from the Amazon Appstore may stop functioning on non-Amazon devices, but users of Fire tablets and Fire TV products will remain unaffected. The Amazon Coins program will be discontinued across all marketplaces. Developers can update existing apps for six months, but the option to submit new titles for Android devices has been removed. Amazon cites an effort to streamline services as the reason for these changes, indicating the Appstore may not have gained sufficient traction among Android users.

Android developers are preparing for a transition to a 16 KB memory page size, expected to improve performance by 5–10% across applications and games. Google has introduced developer options for testing on Pixel 8 and Pixel 9 devices, with support from other OEMs like Samsung and Xiaomi anticipated. Developers using native code must assess and rebuild their apps, ensuring compatibility with the new page size by upgrading to Android Gradle Plugin version 8.5.1 or later and using NDK version r28 or later. Applications without native code will remain compatible without modification. Testing for compatibility can be done using emulators or physical devices like the Pixel 8/8 Pro and future Pixel 9 models. Developers are advised to avoid hardcoding assumptions about memory page sizes to prevent compatibility issues.

Researchers have identified 15 predatory loan applications on the Google Play Store that collectively garnered eight million downloads before being removed. These apps, which falsely advertised low-interest loans, engaged in extortion and harassment of users, particularly targeting individuals in South America, Southeast Asia, and Africa, including countries like Mexico, Colombia, and Senegal. The apps requested a one-time passcode to access user location information for their predatory practices. Users are advised to check app ratings, download numbers, and reviews to verify app legitimacy.

Samsung is set to introduce One UI 7.0, with notable changes including the discontinuation of new Edge Panel downloads from the Galaxy Store after the upgrade. Users will still have access to previously downloaded Edge Panels, which can be found in the "My apps" section of the Galaxy Store. However, if users uninstall these Panels post-upgrade, they will not be able to re-download them. This policy also applies to new devices with One UI 7 or later, allowing access only to previously installed Edge Panels.
