Microsoft is offering Extended Security Updates (ESUs) for Windows Server 2016, which will provide critical security patches until January 2030, after the end of extended support on January 12, 2027. Organizations can enroll their Windows Server 2016 instances via Azure Arc to receive these updates without migrating to Azure. The ESUs are available through a pay-as-you-go pricing model, allowing flexibility for on-premises servers and other cloud platforms. By using Azure Arc, organizations gain access to Azure management tools for improved visibility and compliance. IT administrators should connect eligible systems to Azure Arc to manage ESU enrollment and compliance effectively. ESUs are intended as a temporary solution while businesses modernize applications and plan migrations to supported platforms.

DH2i will host a live webinar titled "Simplify Hybrid SQL Server: Windows & Red Hat OpenShift Side By Side" on August 20 at 12:00 PM Eastern Time (9:00 AM Pacific Time) in collaboration with Microsoft and Red Hat. The webinar aims to help organizations extend their SQL Server OLTP environments to Red Hat OpenShift, focusing on deploying a secure, cross-platform Availability Group (AG) linking Windows Server VMs with Red Hat OpenShift. Key topics include automating Kubernetes AG cluster deployment, establishing secure connections using Zero Trust Networking (ZTNA), and implementing HA automation for hybrid SQL Server environments. Featured speakers include OJ Ngo from DH2i, Amit Khandelwal from Microsoft, and Vivien Wang from Red Hat. Registration is available for those interested in attending or accessing the recording later.

Windows 11 is undergoing enhancements, with many features currently exclusive to Windows Insiders and still in the mockup phase. Microsoft is overhauling the Windows 11 interface, integrating WinUI into components like the Start menu and File Explorer. Windows Insider participants must update their systems to a new build by August 11, 2026, to avoid expiration of builds and ensure automatic updates. Lenovo's latest BIOS update for the Legion Go gaming handheld has made some devices inoperable, prompting users to avoid the update. The modernization of Windows has been criticized for not being prioritized earlier, despite significant user feedback. The Seagate Storage Expansion Card for Xbox Series X|S is currently in short supply, and the Dell XPS 14 has a price reduction of 0.

Microsoft has introduced a preview of the Event Tracing for Windows Model Context Protocol (ETW MCP) to enhance Windows performance analysis. This server integrates artificial intelligence to streamline the analysis of Windows Event Tracing (ETW) logs. The ETW MCP allows developers to use tools like GitHub Copilot to examine Event Trace Log (ETL) files, answer queries about the logs, and identify performance issues without manual data sifting. The MCP provides structured, read-only access to processed trace information, enabling developers to query insights such as CPU usage and execution paths. Current features of the ETW MCP include trace processing, querying, multi-trace comparison, symbol-aware analysis, critical path analysis, and regions of interest. The ETW MCP is designed for headless environments and automation, while a forthcoming WPA MCP will provide similar AI-assisted analysis within a graphical interface. The ETW MCP preview is available as the Microsoft.Windows.EventTracing.MCP NuGet package, and Microsoft is seeking developer feedback for further enhancements.

Marcus Ash, Corporate Vice President of Design and Research at Microsoft, discussed the stagnation in UI updates for Windows 11 tools like Control Panel, File Explorer, and Registry Editor, emphasizing the importance of maintaining functionality and compatibility with legacy systems. He noted that changing the Control Panel is challenging due to the need to avoid disrupting existing functionalities that users rely on. Microsoft is focused on modernizing these applications while ensuring core functionalities remain intact, using user behavior, telemetry data, and feedback to guide updates. Ash mentioned that the Registry Editor is also set for modernization without compromising its essential functions. Additionally, Pavan Davuluri, President of Windows and Devices, stated that Windows 11 would be optimized for devices with 8GB of RAM.

Cloud database provider Turso is developing a Postgres-compatible implementation based on its SQLite-compatible database, which was created from scratch in Rust. CEO Glauber Costa believes Postgres can benefit from modernization for cloud-native applications. Turso's SQLite reimplementation, now called Turso, uses a virtual machine architecture that may eventually support other database frontends, including MySQL and Redis. The company initially forked SQLite into libSQL but later pivoted to a cloud service named Turso. They focused on a virtual machine architecture for their rewrite, which translates SQL queries into a custom bytecode language. Turso has developed a Postgres-compatible prototype named pgmicro, which aims to run existing applications with minimal modifications. The company is also working on a database-as-a-cloud service that will allow customers to use various database types on the Turso platform.

Mojang Studios has updated the system requirements for Minecraft: Java Edition for the first time in 17 years, raising the recommended memory to 16GB of RAM. The new minimum specifications include a 64-bit operating system, a quad-core CPU, a graphics card supporting Vulkan 1.3 API with at least 2GB of VRAM, and 8GB of system RAM for discrete GPUs or 12GB for integrated graphics. For the recommended "Fancy" preset, 16GB of system memory, a current-generation processor, and a graphics card with 6GB or more of VRAM are required. Older hardware may struggle to run the game, leading to low frame rates and visual issues. Mojang is transitioning from OpenGL to Vulkan to enhance game performance and visuals. Players can still use Minecraft: Bedrock Edition for lower system requirements or community optimization mods like Sodium to improve performance on less capable hardware.
