Microsoft has introduced a feature called Copilot Vision in its Edge browser, which allows AI to perceive and interpret content on users' screens. This feature is currently free but limited to users in the United States. Concerns about privacy and data security have arisen, prompting Microsoft to take a cautious approach to its rollout. Both Copilot Vision and a previous feature, Windows Recall, which captures snapshots of a user’s PC, are optional and require user activation. Microsoft has made modifications to enhance the security of Windows Recall in response to privacy concerns.

Google is enhancing its Home app to simplify smart device management with user interface modifications. Upcoming updates will include a dedicated QR scanner in the Devices tab and a search bar in the Favorites section. In December, Google began a Public Preview test for the "Help me create" feature, which uses Gemini AI to help users automate their smart home systems by defining a Starter, Condition, and Action. Additionally, a separate Public Preview test for "Gemini in Assistant" aims to improve responses for Nest devices, allowing users to interrupt or request clarification from the Assistant.

Windows operating systems have numerous background services that can consume system resources and slow down performance. Users can improve responsiveness by disabling non-essential services. 1. Windows Search: Indexes files and data for quick searches; can tax CPU and RAM. To disable: press Ctrl + R, type services.msc, locate Windows Search, stop the service, and set Startup type to Disabled or Manual. 2. SysMain (formerly Superfetch): Preloads frequently used applications into memory but can lead to unnecessary disk activity on SSDs. To disable: access services.msc, find SysMain, stop the service, and set Startup Type to Disabled. 3. Windows Update Delivery Optimization: Shares update files with other PCs, consuming bandwidth. To disable: go to Settings -> Windows Update -> Advanced Options and turn it off. 4. Remote Desktop Services: Enables remote connections, which can drain resources and pose security risks. To disable: locate Remote Desktop Services in services.msc, stop it, and set Startup type to Disabled. 5. Connected User Experiences and Telemetry: Collects usage data and can transmit sensitive information. To disable: turn off the service and navigate to Settings -> Privacy & Security -> Diagnostics & Feedback to disable Diagnostic data. Additional services that may be disabled include Print Spooler, Fax, Bluetooth Support, and Windows Error Reporting Service for further performance optimization.

Samsung has launched Samsung Auto, a platform for Galaxy devices in China aimed at enhancing the driving experience with features similar to Android Auto. It is part of the One UI 7 software update and is currently limited to select regions, primarily utilizing Samsung's previous “Car Mode.” The platform includes a custom launcher and app support for in-car use. A key feature of Samsung Auto is its intelligent location-based navigation, which allows users to reroute by extracting addresses from incoming messages, enabling navigation with a single tap. The app also ensures navigation continuity between the user's phone and vehicle. Samsung Auto connects to compatible vehicles through Baidu CarLife+ or ICCOA CarLink, which are mainly found in Chinese-market vehicles, limiting its reach. The user interface resembles that of Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, featuring a central dashboard for navigation and music controls. Currently, there are no plans for a global rollout of Samsung Auto, as it relies on Chinese vehicle systems, and significant modifications would be needed for broader implementation.

The Identity Check feature has been observed on the OnePlus 13 operating with the Android 16 beta, indicating an expansion of its availability beyond select Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy devices. This feature adds a layer of security for devices outside designated trusted locations and requires a comprehensive system update due to modifications in Android's biometric prompt code. Users can find the Identity Check option in the Settings > Google > Theft Protection menu after upgrading to Android 16. To use Identity Check, users must authenticate their identity through biometric means, such as fingerprint or facial recognition, when accessing sensitive information outside a trusted environment. The feature was initially introduced with Android 15 QPR1 for Pixel devices and is expected to be adopted by other manufacturers. It may not be enabled by default and will be compatible with devices equipped with class three biometric hardware.

Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26200.5551 (KB5055617) has been released to the Dev Channel. The Dev Channel has advanced to the 26200 series builds, and the option to switch to the Beta Channel is no longer available. This build is based on Windows 11, version 24H2, and shares features with the 26120 series in the Beta Channel. New features include enhanced Windows Search on Copilot+ PCs, allowing users to search for settings using phrases. Narrator now provides detailed image descriptions powered by AI for improved accessibility on Copilot+ PCs. Improvements are being rolled out for widgets, including the ability to read content directly from the MSN feed. Fixes include resolving crashes in Settings, File Explorer, and issues with app icons in the taskbar. Known issues include problems with Windows Recovery Environment and certain apps failing to launch post-update. The Dev Channel updates are based on Windows 11, version 24H2, and features may evolve or be removed based on feedback. Users can enable a toggle to receive updates more quickly.

A recent study has revealed a method that bypasses Microsoft’s Windows Defender antivirus by using direct system calls and XOR encryption techniques, exposing vulnerabilities in the security solution. The technique targets the user mode and kernel mode operations of Windows, allowing attackers to execute harmful code without detection. Researchers demonstrated that by directly invoking syscall instructions, they could evade security monitoring that typically occurs at the user mode level. They utilized XOR encryption to obfuscate malicious shellcodes, making them unrecognizable and undetectable by signature-based systems. Tests showed that a Meterpreter reverse shell payload, encrypted with XOR and executed via direct syscalls, successfully bypassed Windows Defender protections without leaving traces on the disk. This method has been effective since at least 2022 and continues to work against recent updates of Windows Defender. The researchers recommend that Microsoft enhance defenses with kernel-level monitoring of syscalls and advise organizations to implement additional security measures beyond Windows Defender.
