DayZ creator’s monster-hunting survival game gets major new DLC offering brutal endgame challenges with lavish loot: ‘Survival games should be challenging, after all’

Rocketwerkz has launched the DLC for Icarus, called the Great Hunts Campaigns, featuring three campaigns with 34 missions across all open-world maps. Crafting High Rank armor automatically transforms it into layered armor, simplifying the process compared to previous titles. Dauntless, the monster hunting game we had before Monster Hunter came to PC, will shut down in May

Phoenix Labs has announced that its game Dauntless will shut down on May 29, 2025. The game struggled to maintain popularity after the release of Monster Hunter: World. In May 2024, Phoenix Labs faced layoffs and canceled several projects. Dauntless moved from the Epic Games Store to Steam in December 2024, but the transition was plagued by issues, leading to a decline in user ratings. By January 2025, the studio laid off a significant portion of its workforce. The studio was acquired by the crypto company Forte in 2023, which some speculate may have contributed to its decline. The future of another title, Fae Farm, remains uncertain.

The Monster Hunter Wilds beta is now live

The beta test for Monster Hunter Wilds is available on Steam, PC, PS5, and Xbox. It started on February 6th at 7 PM Pacific and ends on February 9th at the same time. A repeat session will occur from February 13th to 16th, also starting at 7 PM Pacific. Participants can request access on Steam without any cap on the number of players. The beta requires approximately 24GB of disk space and includes a shader compilation process that may take several minutes. The official launch of the game is scheduled for February 27th.

5 hours with Monster Hunter Wilds soothed my beta fears, but I left more impressed by its storytelling chops

The Monster Hunter franchise focuses on exhilarating hunts against formidable creatures, with a straightforward narrative that often takes a backseat. The upcoming PC launch in February has raised performance concerns, but a recent preview on PlayStation 5 showed significant improvements in gameplay smoothness and framerate. The demo allowed exploration of character creation, quests, and refined combat mechanics, including enhanced mobility for heavier weapons and a new Focus Mode for targeting monster wounds. Changes to armor skills now allow for weapon-based offensive skills, promoting flexibility in mid-hunt weapon swapping.
