Aptoide, a Portugal-based app distributor, has returned to Google Play in the U.S. after more than a decade, taking advantage of new options that allow competing Android app stores to be accessed directly from Google Play.
Gemini, Google's app, has surpassed 1 billion monthly active users, making it the fastest-growing product in the company's history. Google plans to enhance Gemini's functionality with new integrations, connecting it to popular applications like Ticketmaster, Otter.ai, Wix, OpenTable, Zocdoc, and Pandora. These integrations aim to streamline user experiences, allowing for seamless task management within a single conversation. Users will soon be able to manage meeting outcomes more directly with Granola and Otter.ai, edit websites through Wix, and plan social activities with services like Fever and GetYourGuide. Additionally, Gemini will assist in home management and entertainment through partnerships with iHeartRadio and Pandora, as well as services like Angi and Thumbtack. The rollout of these new services is expected in the coming weeks.
Google's Gemini app has surpassed 1 billion monthly active users. Approximately 63 percent of users engage with the app vocally, and 20 percent use visual communication methods like the app's camera and screen-sharing features. Most users access Gemini on Android devices, but 10 percent use Apple devices.
The Play Catalog Access Program was implemented on July 22, 2026, as a result of a court order after Google lost a lawsuit filed by Epic Games for illegally monopolizing Android app distribution and in-app billing. The program allows enrolled stores, such as Aptoide Games, to access Google Play's app catalog and offer users the ability to install apps through Google Play's infrastructure, maintaining security and service fees.
Developers of the Heroic Games Launcher have announced Xodus, an open-source project aimed at enabling access to PC Game Pass on Linux and macOS. Launched on August 10, 2026, Xodus has successfully addressed Xbox identity authentication and the decryption of MSIXVC packages, allowing local play of Game Pass titles for Linux and macOS users. Currently, the only way to access Game Pass on non-Windows devices is through Xbox Cloud Gaming, which requires a Game Pass Ultimate subscription and introduces latency.
Xodus employs a layered architecture, including an Xbox Authentication Library (xal-rs) for managing Microsoft account sign-ins and license verification, and a reimplementation of the xgameruntime.dll for license checks and Xbox service access. The project can retrieve MSIXVC game packages using a valid Game Pass subscription and decrypt executables for local storage. However, it does not yet support UWP-based titles and lacks a user-friendly interface for general users.
The project is under pressure due to Microsoft's upcoming transition to the MSIXVC2 package format, which Xodus does not currently support. Xodus is in early development with only a command-line interface available, and the team is working on emulating the GDK Gaming Services layer necessary for game initialization. The project is legal as it reimplements Xbox runtime behavior without enabling piracy, but it faces risks if Microsoft alters its authentication infrastructure.
Aptoide has returned to Google Play in the U.S. after more than a decade, becoming the first alternative Android app store to benefit from recent court-ordered changes promoting competition within the Play Store. Aptoide, based in Portugal, is one of the largest Android marketplaces outside of Google Play, with over 40,000 apps and around 25 million monthly active users, making the U.S. its largest market. This return allows Aptoide to leverage familiar user behaviors for app installation, enhancing its competitiveness, particularly in the gaming sector. The change follows a ruling in the Epic Games lawsuit against Google, which found anticompetitive practices in the Android app ecosystem. Since June 22, 2026, Google has allowed third-party app stores access to its app catalog through the Play Catalog Access Program, facilitating the installation of alternative stores and creating new opportunities for developers and publishers in the U.S. market.
Aptoide Games, the specialized games app store, has been approved for distribution through Google Play in the United States under Google's new Play Catalog Access program.
The desktop version of Facebook experienced a global outage on Sunday morning, causing users to receive messages indicating their accounts were “currently unavailable due to a site issue.” The platform returned to normal operations just before noon after approximately three hours of downtime. During this period, the DownDetector website noted a spike in searches for “Facebook down,” peaking around 9 am. While the desktop version faced issues, the mobile app continued to function largely without disruption, although some users had difficulties uploading content or sending messages. Instagram users also reported problems, receiving error messages related to viewing and sharing posts. Meta had not issued an official statement regarding the outage. Approximately 1.5% to 2% of Facebook's estimated 3 billion monthly active users access the platform exclusively via desktop, while over 81% use mobile devices.
Steve Allison has left his position as vice president and general manager of the Epic Games Store after eight years to become the chief business officer at Saber Interactive. He praised Saber Interactive's founders and their ability to create high-quality games cost-effectively, mentioning upcoming titles like Space Marine 3, Jurassic Park, Turok, Hellraiser, and a new John Wick game, along with several unannounced projects. During his tenure at Epic Games, Allison helped launch the Epic Games Store in 2018, which now has 78 million monthly active users, largely due to the strategy of offering free games. The Epic Games Store competes with Steam, which is estimated to have around 200 million monthly active users. Saber Interactive, founded in 2001, gained recognition for its work on Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary and was acquired by Embracer in 2020, later being sold to a company owned by Karch for 7 million.
Opera has experienced a 66% growth in monthly active users on Android in the UK and a 40% increase in the US year-over-year during the second quarter. This growth is attributed to features like a free unlimited VPN, an integrated ad blocker, and advanced AI tools, which are not provided by Google Chrome. Additionally, Opera's user base in Europe has also been rising, aided by the European Union's Digital Markets Act. Despite Chrome being the default browser on most Android devices, more users are exploring alternatives like Opera.
