Microsoft is introducing the "Copilot+ PC," a new category of Windows PCs that run on Windows 11 but have specific hardware requirements, including up to 16GB of RAM, a 256GB SSD, and a Neural Processing Unit (NPU) capable of 40+ TOPs. The NPU is crucial for AI and machine learning tasks, allowing for on-device AI processing. Not all Windows 11 devices qualify as Copilot+ PCs, particularly older models with lower NPU capabilities. Microsoft claims that Copilot+ PCs enhance productivity and creativity with features like a dedicated Copilot key, Recall for screen activity, Live Captions in over 40 languages, image generation in Paint, and tools in Microsoft Photos for editing. Despite the focus on AI, some manufacturers are shifting their attention to other features such as build quality and gaming performance.

TrigrZolt conducted benchmarks on multiple Windows versions (XP, Vista, 7, 8.1, 10, and 11) using a Lenovo ThinkPad X220. Windows 8.1 had the fastest startup time due to its Fast Boot feature, while Windows 11 was notably slow, struggling to load the taskbar. Windows XP had the smallest installation size and least RAM usage at 800 MB, compared to Windows 11's 3.3 GB. In memory management tests with the Supermium browser, Windows XP and Windows 11 performed similarly under heavy usage, but Windows 7 and 8.1 managed to keep over 200 tabs open before hitting the 5 GB RAM limit. Windows 11 also performed poorly in battery life, video rendering, and application launch times, with users experiencing significant delays. The poor performance of Windows 11 is attributed to extensive code rewrites since Windows 7 and the default storage encryption with BitLocker, which slows performance. Microsoft has implemented workarounds to improve File Explorer's responsiveness. Overall, the trend indicates that increasing resource demands can lead to inefficiencies in software performance.

MS Paint has introduced a new feature called Restyle, currently being rolled out for Windows Insiders in Paint version 11.2509.441.0. This feature allows users to apply preset artistic styles to existing images, accessible through Paint's Copilot menu. Users can either incorporate the generated images into their Paint canvas or save them as separate files. Restyle is designed to transform images sourced from the internet, raising ethical questions about image appropriation. The feature will only be available on Snapdragon-powered Copilot+ PCs.

Cybercriminals are using a sophisticated attack method involving a remote access trojan called RoKRAT, which is embedded within standard JPEG image files. This technique, a variant of steganography, allows the malware to evade detection by conventional security systems. The attack is linked to an advanced persistent threat group known as APT37. The process involves embedding a malicious module within a JPEG file, which, when opened, triggers the malware to inject its code into the MS Paint application. Researchers found that the RoKRAT module is often concealed in images downloaded from cloud storage services, complicating detection efforts. Authorities are warning users to exercise caution with files from unverified sources and to keep their security systems updated.

MetraByte, a YouTuber, is attempting to run Windows 95 on the Nintendo 3DS using a version of DOSBox tailored for the device. The setup process involves extensive command line input and faces numerous challenges, including limited memory, with only 16 MB allocated to the installation. The New Nintendo 3DS has 256 MB of RAM, but struggles to handle the operating system. MetraByte encounters technical hurdles when trying to allocate more memory, with the system crashing beyond 32 MB. The project highlights the limitations of the 3DS while showcasing the interest in retro technology.
