Chrome for Android has windows, and they’re better than tab groups for multitasking

Chrome for Android supports the use of windows, allowing users to open multiple windows, each with its own tabs while sharing bookmarks and settings. Users can open an unlimited number of windows, which appear distinctly in Android's Recents screen. To open a new window on slab-style phones, users activate split-screen mode, tap the three-dot menu icon, and select "New window." For foldable phones, users can skip the split-screen step. Tabs can be moved between windows using the three-dot menu icon. All open windows can be managed through the Recents multitasking screen, where users can assign names or close them. This window functionality enhances multitasking and organization, making mobile browsing more akin to a desktop experience. Other browsers like Samsung Internet and Microsoft Edge have adopted similar features, while Firefox has not.

Google confirms Android Auto updates & fixes for media apps – the squiggly line is here to stay

Google has announced enhancements to Android Auto, particularly for media applications. A key feature allows users to control media playback from any app, including YouTube, but does not enable browsing app content directly. A redesigned media app player has been introduced for apps like Spotify and YouTube Music, providing easier access to playback controls and optimizing for various screen sizes. Users will soon be able to swipe between active media sessions from the dashboard widget, improving multitasking while driving. Improvements have been made to the autoplay function, ensuring that media apps not recently used will not be selected for autoplay, and Android Auto will recognize user behavior patterns regarding autoplay. The new "squiggly line" design for the media player has been confirmed as a permanent addition, aimed at providing a clearer visual representation of track progress.

The AI memory crunch has reached the apps on your phone

Google will implement new memory usage regulations for Android applications starting in February 2027, due to a global RAM shortage. Apps exceeding the set memory limits may be throttled, terminated, or face reduced visibility on the Play Store. The memory thresholds vary based on device specifications, with specific limits for foreground, background, and bitmap memory usage. Non-compliance will result in penalties affecting app distribution and visibility. The memory crisis is attributed to increased demand from the AI data center industry, leading to rising RAM costs. The new limits will first apply to Pixel devices with Android 17, and other manufacturers are expected to follow. Additionally, by April 2027, all apps on the Play Store must support zero-tap credential restoration for users transitioning to new devices.
