Android Auto’s weather experience is broken, and a raccoon meme isn’t going to fix it

In early September, the Authority Insights team at Android Authority discovered a potential feature for Android Auto that includes an animated raccoon displaying real-time weather conditions. The feature raises concerns about practicality and driver distraction, as it could detract from the user interface's efficiency, which is designed to present information clearly and quickly. Accurate weather information is crucial for drivers, as over 260,000 individuals are injured annually in weather-related accidents in the U.S., with around 3,800 fatalities. Currently, Android Auto's weather capabilities are limited, with some users lacking access to detailed weather information. Suggestions for improvement include an optional weather overlay on Google Maps or a snippet within navigation dialogs to provide timely weather updates without compromising navigation details. Enhancing voice capabilities for receiving weather updates could also improve safety. The feature discovered may not be implemented, but there is a call for a comprehensive weather alert system for Android Auto that prioritizes driver safety.

Your old phone isn’t useless: 4 smart ways to get more life out of it

Phone upgrades often lead to replacing devices every couple of years, but old phones still hold value. Users typically choose to deal with their old phones in the following ways: 26% sell or trade it in, 26% hand it down to family or friends, 42% turn it into a dedicated gadget, and 5% let it sit in a drawer. Old phones can be kept as second devices for personal and work separation, used as an Android Auto display, or serve as a backup phone for emergencies. They can also be repurposed into gadgets like dash cams, security cameras, music players, e-readers, universal remotes, or PC companions. Additionally, they can replace webcams, act as second screens, or provide portable storage. If repurposing isn’t appealing, selling the phone is a practical option, with a strong market for used phones on platforms like SellCell, Swappa, eBay, or Facebook Marketplace. Trading it in may yield better benefits, especially with retailer promotions, and donating it to charity is another option.

Users can assign various functions to the key, such as launching applications or acting as a shortcut for system functions. Additionally, Microsoft PowerToys can be used for more advanced customization, enabling users to remap the key for tasks like taking screenshots, managing clipboard history, or enhancing gaming experiences.
