Minecraft dev Mojang just added two huge multiplayer features to Java Edition with new Snapshot build

Mojang Studios has introduced new multiplayer features in the Minecraft 26.2 Snapshot 7 for Java Edition, including a Friends List and peer-to-peer connection options. The Friends List allows players to send and receive friend requests using Profile Names and includes tabs for managing friend statuses. Players can invite friends to join their single-player worlds, enhancing social interaction. Previously, private multiplayer sessions required LAN setups or third-party servers. The update may also support mods for peer-to-peer multiplayer if all players have the same mods installed. Additionally, the upcoming Chaos Cubed update will introduce a new sulfur cave biome, scheduled for release in Q2 2026.

Minecraft 26.2 Snapshot 3 Introduces New Sulfur Spike Blocks

The Minecraft 26.2 Snapshot 3 introduces Sulfur Spike blocks, which generate naturally on Sulfur blocks in the Sulfur Cave biomes. These blocks can form stalactites when placed on ceilings and stalagmites when placed on the ground. Players can combine two Sulfur Spikes to create elongated formations. Falling stalactites can damage players, and if there are no blocks above or below them, they will break and drop. Players can also break these spikes using a Minecraft Trident. Additionally, Potent Sulfur blocks can no longer be reverted back to Sulfur blocks, and the Sulfur Cube mob is no longer transportable via boats. Texture updates have been applied to several blocks, including Chiseled Cinnabar, Chiseled Sulfur, Cinnabar, Cinnabar Bricks, Polished Cinnabar, Polished Sulfur, and Sulfur Bricks.

LSE and Lancaster University create Victorian London on Minecraft

Researchers from the London School of Economics (LSE) and Lancaster University have recreated Victorian London in Minecraft through a project called “Charles Booth’s London.” This project utilizes Charles Booth's Poverty Map, which color-codes streets based on income and social class. Players start in the modern LSE library and can explore six historical walks, engaging in quests that reflect daily life in 1886. A team of 15 builders and two academics created over 1,000 new blocks and textures based on 2,000 pages of notes by Booth's assistant, George Duckworth.
