Nothing OS 5.0 Official: Android 17, New Glyph App, AI Tools and Release Date

Nothing OS 5.0 is an upcoming major Android software release built on Android 17, featuring a redesigned visual identity, expanded lock screen customization, improved Glyph Interface controls, new widgets, optimized system performance, and AI-powered Essential tools. Open beta testing will start tomorrow with the Nothing Phone 3, and a stable release is expected by mid-October. Key features include a refined design language with a new typeface, adaptive color system for app icons, enhanced lock screen customization with new clock styles, two new widgets for personal organization, a dedicated Glyph Interface app, improved system performance and Bluetooth controls, and expanded Essential AI tools. The update will not be available for the Nothing Phone 1, Nothing Phone 2, and CMF Phone 1, which have reached the end of their software support.

Nothing’s Playground lets you build the apps you need without coding — and it’s exactly what I need

Nothing's Playground tool allows users to create simple Android apps using AI without coding expertise. It generates mini apps based on user-defined text prompts in minutes. Currently in beta, it is exclusive to the Nothing Phone 3, with plans for broader availability in the future. Users can create, update, and revert apps, and the current version requests only three permissions: location, calendar, and contacts. A February update will add support for activity recognition, sensor data, and a Weather API, with plans for custom app icons, audio, and fonts. Access to the tool is available through the Nothing Playground website.

Nothing owners can now try Android 16 thanks to Nothing OS 4.0 open beta

The open beta for Nothing OS 4.0, based on Android 16, is now available for users of the Nothing Phone 2, Phone 3, and Phone 2a series. Key features include a new quick setting tile size of 2×2, two new lock screen clock faces, an Extra Dark Mode, and support for Essential Apps with shareable widgets. The Nothing Phone 3 can support up to six Essential Apps widgets, while other models can support up to two, with plans for future expansion. The Nothing Phone 3 will also include an “AI usage dashboard” within Essential Space and improvements in Bluetooth connectivity, Wi-Fi stability, display brightness, and camera functionality. The Nothing Phone 2, Phone 2a, and Phone 2a Plus will receive the “Stretch” camera preset and app optimizations for faster startup speeds. An open beta for the Nothing Phone 3a series is expected to launch in October.
