An unofficial Android app blacks out your phone screen, but not your Xreal glasses

An unofficial Android application called "Glasses Mode" has been released, allowing users of USB-C display glasses to blank their phone's screen and disable touch input while the glasses continue to display content. The app, which requires Android 14 or newer, was released on October 18 and is currently available for testing on the OPPO Find N6 with Android 16 and ColorOS. It works with any USB-C glasses that mirror a phone's display and employs a technique that attaches a black layer to the phone’s display to keep the mirrored display on the glasses active. Users can activate the mode with a double-tap of the volume buttons, and the app does not require rooting or a PC for installation. The application is not available on the Play Store and must be downloaded as an APK from the project's releases page. Unplugging the glasses automatically disables the mode, and the app is designed to work with devices that may have varying compatibility.

Minecraft to Murder: Where is Lewis Daynes now, after killing Breck Bednar? How he lured teens on gaming sites

Breck Bednar was a 14-year-old boy from Caterham, Surrey, who was murdered in February 2014 by Lewis Daynes, an older teenager he met on a gaming forum. Daynes, using the alias 'EagleOneSix,' groomed Breck over 13 months, isolating him from family and convincing him to travel to his flat in Grays, Essex, under the pretense of discussing a fictional software business. On February 17, 2014, after Breck arrived, Daynes stabbed him and later confessed to the crime. In November 2014, Daynes pleaded guilty to murder and was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 25 years. As of October 2026, he remains incarcerated and will not be eligible for parole until he has served his minimum term. The case raised concerns about the dangers of online relationships, leading to the creation of an educational film, Breck’s Last Game, in collaboration with Breck's mother, Lorin LaFave.

Microsoft To Block ReFS-Formatted USB Drives And External Storage On Windows Starting January 2027

Starting in January 2027, Windows will block ReFS-formatted USB drives and external storage devices by default as part of a security initiative. This change will affect Windows 11, supported Windows 10 installations, and Windows Server. The rollout will occur in two phases: 1. On October 13, 2026, an initial security update will introduce auditing for affected ReFS volumes, allowing them to mount but recording them in the Event Viewer. 2. In January 2027, Windows will prevent affected ReFS volumes from mounting unless overridden by an administrator. This change will not erase the contents of affected drives, but users may lose access to their files. Microsoft has stated that this move aims to reduce exposure associated with unsupported storage configurations. Most users are unlikely to notice immediate effects, as common USB drives use FAT32, exFAT, or NTFS, which are not subject to this restriction. Users with ReFS-formatted external storage should consider transferring their files to a supported format before the deadline. Additionally, Microsoft has introduced a registry and Group Policy setting, RefsRemovableDeviceMountPolicy, to allow for configurable restrictions.

Latest Windows update disables key security setting – but there’s a workaround

Microsoft's October update for Windows 11, released on October 13, has caused a glitch that disables the Smart App Control feature for some users. This feature, introduced in 2022, is intended to block harmful applications and files. Microsoft is aware of the issue and is working on a fix. Users can check if they are affected by navigating to Settings > Privacy & security > Windows Security > App & browser control > Smart App Control settings. If the option is set to Off and the On option is grayed out, they have encountered the bug. A temporary workaround involves executing specific commands in the command prompt to modify the Windows Registry, which may allow users to enable Smart App Control again after rebooting their PC.
