New ‘Massiv’ Android banking malware poses as an IPTV app

A new strain of Android banking malware called Massiv is disguised as an IPTV application to steal digital identities and access online banking accounts. It uses screen overlays and keylogging techniques to capture sensitive information and can take remote control of compromised devices. Massiv has been observed targeting a Portuguese government application related to Chave Móvel Digital, which contains user data that could bypass know-your-customer (KYC) verifications. The malware allows fraudsters to open accounts in the victim's name at new banks and services, enabling money laundering and loan acquisition. Massiv features two remote control modes: a screen live-streaming mode and a UI-tree mode that extracts structured data from the Accessibility Service. There has been an increase in the use of IPTV applications as bait for Android malware infections, with many of these apps serving as droppers for the malware. The fake IPTV apps primarily target users in Spain, Portugal, France, and Turkey. Users are advised to download applications only from reputable sources and keep security measures active.

Android malware Albiriox abuses 400+ financial apps in on-device fraud and screen manipulation attacks

A new malware-as-a-service (MaaS) called Albiriox has emerged, targeting banking and cryptocurrency applications, particularly focusing on Austrian users. It is marketed on the dark web and employs deceptive tactics, such as mimicking legitimate businesses and creating fake landing pages and app listings on the Google Play Store. Victims are tricked into providing their phone numbers, leading to the delivery of a malicious APK file via SMS or WhatsApp. This APK acts as a dropper, designed to bypass detection methods and requests permissions under the guise of a “software update” to download the actual malicious payload. Once installed, it can take control of the device or function as an infostealer, extracting sensitive information like phone numbers and passwords, which is sent to a Telegram channel. Cleafy researchers suggest that the Albiriox campaign is linked to Russian cyber actors based on their activities on cybercrime forums and communication style.

Don’t want Windows 11 yet? Here is how to keep updates on Windows 10

Support for Windows 10 officially ends on 14 October 2025, after which Microsoft will stop providing free security updates and patches. The Windows 10 Extended Security Updates (ESU) program allows users to continue receiving critical security updates until 13 October 2026. To qualify for ESU, PCs must run Windows 10, version 22H2, be one of the specified editions (Home, Pro, Pro Education, or Workstations), have the latest updates installed, and be signed in with a Microsoft account that has administrator rights. Enrollment can be done at no cost if settings are synced with a Microsoft account, by redeeming 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points, or through a one-time purchase. Each ESU license covers up to 10 devices linked to the same Microsoft account. If users do not enroll in ESU, their PCs will not receive security updates, increasing vulnerability to threats. Upgrading to Windows 11 is recommended for long-term security, but many older PCs may not meet the necessary hardware requirements.
