I Built My Second ETL Pipeline. This Time, I Started Thinking Like a Data Engineer

The author validated each component of the project incrementally: first the Python ETL, then PostgreSQL, followed by Docker, and finally Kestra. This approach ensured that each layer functioned correctly before adding complexity. The final architecture included distinct responsibilities for each component: Python for data processing, PostgreSQL for data storage, Docker for execution, and Kestra for orchestration. The author learned that effective engineering involves considering system reliability, error handling, and observability, shifting the focus from merely writing code to designing entire systems. The experience transformed the author's mindset, emphasizing the importance of incremental building and the separation of execution and orchestration responsibilities.

Microsoft Confirms WSUS Sync Issue Causing Update Delays and Timeouts

WSUS is a management tool for distributing Windows updates across networks. Microsoft deprecated WSUS in September 2024 but continues to provide security fixes and updates. The synchronization issue has led to failures and delays in downloading update metadata, particularly impacting Windows 11 version 23H2 and later, Windows 10 version 1607, and Windows Server 2012 and later. This issue began around July 13, 2026, with mitigation efforts starting on July 18, 2026. Microsoft has released a partial fix for newly installed or rebuilt WSUS servers, while existing servers may still face challenges. The company is developing additional fixes and guidance. In previous years, Microsoft dealt with other WSUS-related issues affecting enterprise clients.

FBI arrests 21-year-old who allegedly stole $200,000 with malware-infected Steam games and spent the money on traceable UberEats gift cards

Zyaire Dontaevious Zamarion Wilkins, a 21-year-old from Florida, was arrested for allegedly leading a cybercrime operation that targeted approximately 8,000 gamers by distributing malware disguised as popular Steam games. Wilkins and two accomplices used social media platforms like Discord, Telegram, X, and LinkedIn to promote their malware-infused games, focusing on individuals with significant cryptocurrency holdings. The compromised games include Dashverse (2024), Lunara (2024), PirateFi (2025), Blockblasters (2025), and Lampy (2026). The FBI's investigation revealed that Bitcoin payments were sent from one of Wilkins' co-conspirators to a user identified as "Sibel.eth," who had lost funds intended for medical treatments for stage 4 cancer.

Windows Server Update Services buckle under Microsoft’s metadata mountain

Existing servers are still experiencing difficulties, and Microsoft is working on solutions to help remove problematic metadata. The issue affects nearly all desktop and server operating systems supported by WSUS, including Windows 11 26H1 and older versions like Windows 10 1607 and Windows Server 2012. Administrators currently have limited options and must monitor the situation as it develops.

North Korea Buried Four-Stage Malware in Flag Images: Zero Antivirus Detections

North Korea's Contagious Interview hackers have been using a deceptive strategy to target developers by posing as recruiters and embedding malware in SVG files. Elastic Security Labs discovered that the attackers hid malicious payloads within HTML comment blocks of these files, allowing the malware to evade antivirus detection. At the time of the findings, no antivirus engines flagged the compromised repositories, which included trojanized GitHub repositories disguised as coding challenges. The malware executed automatically at server startup and deployed four modules: a browser credential and cryptocurrency wallet stealer, a file stealer, a remote access Trojan, and a clipboard monitor. The campaign, tracked as REF9403, is part of the ongoing Contagious Interview operation attributed to North Korea's Lazarus Group, which aims to generate revenue through cryptocurrency theft. Developers are advised to audit any projects run from unsolicited sources and to monitor specific domains associated with the attack.

E.U. Orders Google to Open Android Mic, Camera and Screen to Rival AI Assistants

The European Commission has mandated that Google must provide equal access to rival AI assistants within its Android ecosystem, allowing them to use the same functionalities as Google's Gemini assistant. This includes access to the camera, microphone, and on-screen content, as well as background operation capabilities. Google is required to implement these changes in the upcoming Android 18 release by August 1, 2027. The directive includes two binding specifications under the Digital Markets Act, one of which requires Google to share anonymized search query, click, and ranking data with competing search engines and AI chatbots for a fee. The Android decision involves 11 operating system features, with five classified as restricted, requiring certification for third-party applications. These restricted features include access to on-device data shared by apps, context-aware intelligence, structured on-device integration, screen automation, and system integration. The remaining six features do not require certification, allowing broader access to ambient data, always-on hotword detection, long-press invocation, system-level on-device models, third-party model implementation, and background execution capabilities. Google must establish a Qualified AI Assistant Programme to facilitate access to gated features, allowing third-party Trusted Certification Authorities to certify assistants at no cost. The certification process must be fair and non-discriminatory, and users can consent to bypass the certification requirement for specific services and devices. By August 2027, both certified and user-approved uncertified assistants will be able to interact with applications on a virtual display. Google is also required to anonymize search data before sharing, ensuring user privacy and limiting data access to recipients who meet specific criteria. Kent Walker, Google's president of global affairs, expressed concerns about the security implications of granting external apps access to sensitive device permissions and criticized the anonymization methods for search data. The final measures reflect significant changes from earlier drafts, introducing more stringent requirements regarding data sharing and certification processes.

Civil Servants to Switch to “Max”: New Messenger to Become Main Work Tool by 2030

The government has mandated that all work-related communications for state and municipal employees must transition to the "Max" messenger platform by 2030. The "Max" platform was developed by "Kommunikatsionnaya platforma," with a beta version launched in March 2025 and becoming a mandatory pre-installed application on new smartphones in Russia by September 2025. As of March 2026, "Max" had 100 million registered users and offered features like audio/video calls, chat, voice messaging, large file sharing, and money transfers. In July, the EU imposed sanctions on VK, the parent company of "Kommunikatsionnaya platforma," and "Max" was removed from the Apple App Store in June and from Google Play recently. VK stated that its services remain functional and are available on alternative platforms such as RuStore and Huawei AppGallery. Negotiations with Apple are ongoing to restore "Max" to the App Store.

Windows 10 refuses to die, and the security bill is coming due

Approximately 16.9 percent of monitored Windows devices are still running Windows 10, a decline from about half a year ago. Windows 10 will receive updates until October 12, 2027, for consumer devices and until October 10, 2028, for commercial customers. Small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) have 21.4 percent of their machines on Windows 10, with 23 percent in healthcare and pharmaceutical sectors and 22.7 percent in consumer and retail. A Windows 10 device has an average of 1,903 active Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVEs), compared to 652 on Windows 11. Only 14 percent of Windows 10 assets have Extended Security Updates (ESU) patches applied. Many devices are tied to vendor certifications that complicate upgrades, and the rising cost of new PC hardware is a concern. The stagnation of Windows 11 adoption continues, with minimal change in market share distribution.
