Announcing Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 28020.1619 (Canary Channel)

Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 28020.1619 has been released to the Canary Channel (KB 5077230). Google is quietly making Search a little more colorful

Google is piloting a feature called 'Color your Search,' which introduces soft pastel hues to the Search interface, allowing users to personalize their search environment. Users can choose from ten muted color options that change the top bar and overall theme of the Search interface. Currently, this feature is exclusive to larger-screen devices, such as tablets and foldable smartphones, and is not available on standard smartphones or desktop devices. Windows 11’s “almost full-screen” Android apps mirroring now available for everyone via Phone Link app with supported phones

Users can utilize the "Expanded screen" feature in the Microsoft Phone Link app, allowing up to 90% of desktop screen space to be used when streaming Android applications to Windows 11. This feature is available to all users and may require updates from the Microsoft Store for those who do not see it yet. The Phone Link app previously had a compact view for Android app streaming, but now allows apps to stretch across the desktop. The feature prompts the phone to relaunch the app in a wider layout, which is then streamed to the PC, though not all apps are compatible with this expanded view. The feature is described as "almost-full-screen," leaving about 10% of the screen unused. The "Apps" section in Phone Link may be absent if the device is not supported; compatible devices include select models from Samsung, HONOR, OPPO, ASUS, vivo, and Xiaomi. Microsoft has also introduced the ability to lock PCs directly from Android phones.

Microsoft stops breaking Windows 11 – instead it just made Phone Link even better with Android apps

This feature is still in testing and may have performance issues, such as limited expansion for certain apps like Uber and slightly blurry text. Users can currently use screen mirroring to rotate their phone display to landscape mode as a workaround. The streaming feature is compatible with select smartphones, including models from Samsung, Asus ROG, Honor, OnePlus, Oppo, and Xiaomi. All phones sold in India will be pre-installed with a state-owned ‘security’ app that needs access to all phone permissions — and you can’t delete or uninstall it

The Indian government's Department of Telecommunications has mandated that all phone manufacturers pre-install the Sanchar Saathi app on their devices to enhance connectivity and security. Android manufacturers must comply with this directive for future models, and an OTA update will be provided for existing devices. Apple is also required to include the app on iPhones. The Sanchar Saathi app has over 10 million downloads and requires extensive permissions, including access to phone state, SMS, camera, call logs, and device storage. Manufacturers such as Vivo, Xiaomi, and OnePlus have not yet commented on the directive, while OPPO is assessing the situation and Samsung has not responded to inquiries.

Announcing Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26220.7271 (Dev & Beta Channels)

Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26220.7271 (KB5070307) has been released for both the Dev and Beta Channels. Insiders can switch from the Dev Channel to the Beta Channel while both channels have the same updates. The Xbox full screen experience is now available for additional Windows 11 PC form factors, accessible through Task View, Game Bar settings, or the Win + F11 hotkey. Point-in-time restore is introduced for both channels, allowing users to revert their devices to a previous state. Fluid dictation is now available for voice typing users on NPU devices, enhancing the dictation experience. Vivo Android phone users can resume browsing activity from their phone to their PC, and users of Honor, Huawei, Oppo, Samsung, and Vivo can continue working on M365 Copilot app files across devices. The context menu in File Explorer is being refined, and users can now uninstall Store-managed apps directly from the Microsoft Store. Fixes include resolving taskbar issues, internet connectivity problems, and crashes in Settings. Known issues include the virtual keyboard not being visible for controller users and some applications exhibiting unexpected behavior with the Xbox full screen experience.
