Microsoft Windows Production PCA 2011, the certificate for signing the Windows boot loader, will expire on October 19, 2026. This follows the earlier expiration of two other 2011 certificates in June 2026. PCs without the new certificates will still boot and receive standard updates but will miss out on new security enhancements for the early boot process. The new certificates from 2023 are replacing the 2011 certificates. The KEK certificate, essential for authorizing updates to signature databases, and the Microsoft UEFI CA 2011, which signs third-party boot loaders, will also be replaced by new certificates. Users can check their Secure Boot status through the System Information tool or Windows Security. Microsoft is gradually rolling out the new Secure Boot certificates through Windows Update, and users are advised not to disable Secure Boot to avoid complications. Dell will not issue BIOS updates for platforms that reached their end of service life before January 1, 2026. The transition to Secure Boot has faced challenges for older PCs, and developers are advised against pinning Secure Boot certificates in their applications. Multiple restarts may be required for full integration of the new certificates.

A spare tablet, a USB cable, and a small investment can turn a workspace or kitchen counter into a hub for Android Auto, allowing users to repurpose older devices. To set up Android Auto without a car, you need an Android phone running Android 11 or newer, a spare Android tablet or phone, and a data-capable USB cable. A receiver app, such as Open Headunit or Headunit Reloaded, must be installed on the secondary device. The setup involves connecting the tablet to the phone via USB, selecting Android Auto in the phone's USB options, and following prompts to grant permissions. Android Auto is designed for driving, simplifying interactions with larger controls and allowing voice commands for messages. It can manage smart home devices through Google Home but may not always function reliably. A spare tablet can be positioned conveniently for essential tasks, but trade-offs include limited app availability and the need for the primary phone to remain connected.

Google's Android operating system is evolving, with Android 16 being adopted by a few e-readers and smartphones, including the Viwoods AiPaper, BOOX Palma 3, Note Air6 C, and Boox Note Mini C. Android 16 offers improved app compatibility, integrated artificial intelligence, and enhanced hardware performance, allowing users to install modern third-party applications like Kindle, Kobo, and Google Play Books. The Viwoods and BOOX models feature native AI tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and DeepSeek, providing shortcuts for text summaries, translations, and document analysis. By 2027, more devices with Android 16 and access to the Google Play Store are expected, with companies like Viwoods, Bigme, and BOOX likely to expand their offerings. The Barnes and Noble NOOK operates on a customized version of Android, and Pocketbook has introduced a few models supporting Google Play, though this is seen as an exploratory move.

Ledger has introduced Ledger Atom, a security device designed to enhance the protection of sensitive digital activities while allowing the use of everyday applications. It operates on an open-source Android platform for regular apps and a security-focused operating system for sensitive operations, utilizing a secure element chip and a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) for communication between the two environments. Ledger Atom features an integration with OpenClaw, an AI agent platform, which allows AI agents to suggest actions but requires physical approval for sensitive operations. It includes a physical privacy switch that cuts power to the device's cameras and microphones, and supports GPG/OpenPGP encryption for messages. Ledger Atom is positioned as a quantum-ready signing device with post-quantum cryptography and anti-tampering measures. Reservations for a limited Founder’s Edition are open at a price of 9, with an expected launch in summer 2027, pending necessary certifications.

Ledger has introduced the Ledger Atom, an Android device designed to enhance the security of crypto transactions, AI actions, and private communications, priced at USD 9 and expected to launch in summer 2027. It functions as a security-centric companion rather than a smartphone replacement, combining Android with Ledger OS and a secure element chip. The device features a mode switch between Standard Mode and Secure Mode, with operations in Secure Mode isolated from Android. Ledger Atom will support physical approval for AI agent actions, requiring user consent on the device before proceeding. It will also serve as the interface and signer for Ledger Wallet, allowing users to manage crypto transactions securely. The device supports GPG/OpenPGP encryption for messaging and includes a physical privacy switch to disable cameras and microphones. Ledger Atom is currently available for reservation in a limited Founder’s Edition, requiring a refundable deposit, and includes a Bitcoin voucher and three months of Ledger Recover upon launch.
