Personal computers have improved in speed and performance due to advancements in hardware and software, but performance can still vary based on configurations and usage. The latest version of Windows may experience occasional lags even with high-end hardware. To optimize Windows PCs, users should ensure they have the latest updates installed, as these enhance performance and security. Regularly updating drivers and applications is also important. Freeing up disk space is crucial for optimal performance, as a cluttered hard drive can slow down the system. Users should monitor their disk space and delete unnecessary files. Malware can hinder performance, so running antivirus scans is essential if issues arise. Adjusting power settings to "Best Performance" can improve speed, particularly when the device is plugged in. Pausing OneDrive syncing can alleviate resource consumption during uploads. Upgrading to a solid-state drive (SSD) can significantly enhance performance, as SSDs offer faster boot times and application loading. Increasing RAM capacity allows for better handling of simultaneous processes. Disabling unnecessary startup programs can free up system resources, and adjusting Windows appearance settings can conserve RAM. Uninstalling unused applications can also improve performance. For gamers, enabling Game Mode prioritizes system resources for gaming. Regularly restarting the PC helps maintain optimal performance by closing background processes and refreshing memory.

Windows has evolved from being a target for malware to having robust built-in protection, particularly through Microsoft Defender Antivirus, which has improved from a score of 0.5 in 2015 to a perfect score of six in 2026, detecting 100% of threats. Microsoft Defender operates seamlessly in the background, automatically scanning files and applications. Third-party antivirus solutions, while offering additional features like anti-scam tools and VPNs, may not be necessary for all users, especially since many browsers have built-in protections. Users are encouraged to reassess the necessity of paid antivirus subscriptions, as free versions can be intrusive and may lead to conflicts with Defender. Performance tests indicate that third-party antivirus solutions can impact game performance, with Malwarebytes Premium showing a notable reduction in frame rates during scans. For most users, Windows' built-in protection is likely sufficient unless specific additional features are needed.

A developer named Gathin has created tv-vibehack, a free and open-source tool for Android TV users that removes unwanted advertisements and preloaded applications. The tool operates over Wi-Fi and allows users to customize their home screens to resemble an Apple TV interface without rooting or physical connections. It can identify and debloat various TV models, such as Xiaomi, Redmi, TCL, Hisense, Sony, OnePlus, Realme, and Nvidia Shield, but does not support Samsung, LG, or Amazon Fire TV. The process takes about 15 minutes and includes a custom launcher with features like a sleek black background, a dock for favorite apps, and a drifting clock screensaver. Users must enable USB debugging and trust their computer to initiate the debloating process, which is facilitated by a coding assistant. While the tool does not root or permanently delete anything, users are advised to back up data and review documentation carefully, as disabling critical packages may disrupt essential features.

Capping in-game frame rates (fps) can enhance GPU performance, reduce screen tearing, and lower GPU load, leading to quieter fan operation and decreased power consumption. It is generally advisable to cap frame rates to maintain stable performance and minimize screen tearing, especially when using a Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) monitor. Setting a frame rate cap prevents in-game action from exceeding the monitor's refresh rate, which can reduce latency. Screen tearing occurs when a new frame is sent to the monitor before the previous one is fully displayed, causing visual disruptions. To cap frame rates, users can utilize built-in fps limiters in games, NVIDIA Control Panel for NVIDIA users, AMD Adrenalin for AMD users, or third-party software like Guru3D RTSS RivaTuner. The recommended cap is typically three or four frames below the display's maximum refresh rate. V-Sync synchronizes the game's frame rate with the monitor's refresh rate to eliminate screen tearing but introduces input lag, which varies by refresh rate. Fast V-Sync is an alternative that reduces lag while maintaining a tear-free experience, though it may not be compatible with all games.

Microsoft Windows Production PCA 2011, the certificate for signing the Windows boot loader, will expire on October 19, 2026. This follows the earlier expiration of two other 2011 certificates in June 2026. PCs without the new certificates will still boot and receive standard updates but will miss out on new security enhancements for the early boot process. The new certificates from 2023 are replacing the 2011 certificates. The KEK certificate, essential for authorizing updates to signature databases, and the Microsoft UEFI CA 2011, which signs third-party boot loaders, will also be replaced by new certificates. Users can check their Secure Boot status through the System Information tool or Windows Security. Microsoft is gradually rolling out the new Secure Boot certificates through Windows Update, and users are advised not to disable Secure Boot to avoid complications. Dell will not issue BIOS updates for platforms that reached their end of service life before January 1, 2026. The transition to Secure Boot has faced challenges for older PCs, and developers are advised against pinning Secure Boot certificates in their applications. Multiple restarts may be required for full integration of the new certificates.

A spare tablet, a USB cable, and a small investment can turn a workspace or kitchen counter into a hub for Android Auto, allowing users to repurpose older devices. To set up Android Auto without a car, you need an Android phone running Android 11 or newer, a spare Android tablet or phone, and a data-capable USB cable. A receiver app, such as Open Headunit or Headunit Reloaded, must be installed on the secondary device. The setup involves connecting the tablet to the phone via USB, selecting Android Auto in the phone's USB options, and following prompts to grant permissions. Android Auto is designed for driving, simplifying interactions with larger controls and allowing voice commands for messages. It can manage smart home devices through Google Home but may not always function reliably. A spare tablet can be positioned conveniently for essential tasks, but trade-offs include limited app availability and the need for the primary phone to remain connected.
