22 of Russia’s 30 most popular Android apps monitor whether users have VPN enabled, study finds

Recent research by RKS Global found that 22 out of the top 30 Android apps in Russia monitor users' VPN status. Banking apps like T-Bank, Sberbank, VTB, and Alfa-Bank are leading this trend, along with Yandex and VK applications such as Yandex Browser and VKontakte. Online marketplaces including Wildberries, Ozon, MegaMarket, and Samokat also track VPN usage. In total, 18 of the 30 apps transmit VPN status data to their servers, while 24 send lists of installed applications. Yandex Browser uniquely searches for the Tor browser, and Samokat and MegaMarket retrieve lists of installed VPN apps. The Russian Digital Development Ministry has mandated that major internet platforms restrict access for users with VPNs by April 15.

Linux gamers didn’t do anything wrong, but they might pay for Windows piracy anyway

This resurgence of piracy poses security risks, as users must disable kernel-level security features, exposing their systems to vulnerabilities. Irdeto, the company behind Denuvo, recognizes the need for updated security measures, but these could complicate the gaming experience for Linux users. Linux's open-source nature complicates enforcing kernel integrity, making effective anti-cheat and DRM systems challenging. Despite these issues, Linux gaming has seen considerable growth, but the threat of hypervisor-based piracy could jeopardize this progress and lead to tighter DRM measures that may reduce Linux compatibility.

Netflix ordered to pay back millions of subscribers in landmark ruling

A court in Rome ruled that Netflix's price hikes from 2017 to 2024 were illegal due to a lack of justified reasons. Long-term subscribers in Italy could receive refunds of up to €500 for Premium plan users and €250 for Standard plan users. Netflix has 90 days to inform affected customers, or it may face daily fines of €700. WhatsApp on Windows users targeted in new campaign, warns Microsoft

The attack uses social engineering tactics, where users receive a seemingly benign .vbs (Visual Basic Script) file that can be executed on Windows. This method does not rely on software vulnerabilities but on persuading victims to execute the malicious file. Attackers manipulate built-in Windows tools to download further malware, employing a technique known as living off the land (LOTL) to avoid detection. The malware seeks to elevate its privileges to administrator status, modifying User Account Control (UAC) prompts and registry settings for persistence. An unsigned MSI (Microsoft Installer) is deployed to establish remote-access software, granting continuous access to the compromised machine.
