Microsoft will begin rolling out new Secure Boot certificates through Windows Update starting in March 2026, coinciding with the expiration of original certificates from 2011, which will phase out in June 2026. The new certificates include Microsoft Corporation KEK 2K CA 2023, Microsoft UEFI CA 2023, Microsoft Option ROM UEFI CA 2023, and Windows UEFI CA 2023. Not all Windows users will receive the update simultaneously; eligibility will focus on high-confidence devices with strong update histories. Newer PCs sold from 2024 will already have the 2023 Secure Boot certificates, while some devices may require additional firmware updates from their OEMs. PCs that do not receive the new certificates will still boot but will operate with diminished security, increasing vulnerability to exploits and compatibility issues with anti-cheat software and future Windows versions. Users on unsupported Windows versions will not receive the new certificates, leading to heightened security risks after June 2026.

The tech community is dissatisfied with Microsoft's compatibility requirements for Windows 11, which have made some PCs from six or seven years ago obsolete and ineligible for security updates. Apple's update policy for MacOS is similarly restrictive, with free security updates provided only for the three most recent versions. The upcoming MacOS 26 Tahoe will lead to MacOS 13 Ventura no longer receiving updates, leaving older Macs unsupported due to hardware compatibility issues. Macs from 2017 or earlier will not upgrade to MacOS 14 Sonoma. Users can check compatibility through the "About This Mac" option. For Windows PCs, compatibility with Windows 11 generally requires a CPU from 2019 or later, with Microsoft's PC Health Check app available to identify issues. Windows 10 users can purchase security updates for up to three years after the end of support in October 2025, unlike Mac users. Both platforms typically provide security updates for eight to ten years after release.

Microsoft's Smart App Control (SAC) is integrated into Windows 11 and requires a clean installation to function optimally. It is designed to enhance security by using artificial intelligence to proactively shield users from threats, working alongside existing antivirus software rather than replacing it. SAC aims to anticipate and block suspicious applications before they can cause harm, minimizing system performance impact by avoiding constant file scanning. However, the effectiveness of SAC and its claims of being a groundbreaking innovation have been questioned, as proactive security measures have existed for years, and modern antivirus solutions offer advanced features beyond basic scanning. Users are advised to consider independent testing platforms for reliable antimalware options.
