‘Ask Photos’ in Google Photos shows results faster, so you’re not waiting on Gemini

Google has updated its Photos application to enhance the speed of the Ask Photos feature for broader queries. The update allows users to search for general terms like "beaches" or "dogs," with Ask Photos prioritizing relevant results while Gemini refines specific outcomes. Initially launched in September 2024, Ask Photos has undergone a redesign of its Gemini chat interface. The speed enhancement targets the AI's performance in handling broad queries, delivering immediate results in a grid view of images. The feature is now available to English-speaking users in the U.S. aged 18 and older, moving beyond its early access phase. Additionally, the user interface has been refined to include a "try asking" section with suggested actions.

AI-powered Relight and Search now available in Microsoft Photos

The Microsoft Photos app has been updated on Windows 11, introducing new features for Copilot+ PCs. The Relight feature allows users to adjust lighting in images by positioning up to three light sources, changing light color, and setting a focus point, with additional brightness and intensity controls. Built-in presets are also available for quick application. This feature will initially be available on Snapdragon-powered Copilot+ PCs, with support for AMD and Intel-powered devices coming soon. The app now includes improved photo search using natural language, enabling users to find images by descriptive phrases. For commercial users signed in with Microsoft Entra ID, access to Restyle Image and Image Creator is now available. Users should update their Photos app to version 2025.11060.5006.0 or higher to access these features.

Google highlights smarter Gemini capabilities when integrating the Photos app

Google has introduced a support document detailing the integration of its Gemini AI with the Photos app for Android devices, allowing users to search for specific memories using details like places, faces, dates, and events. This functionality is currently being rolled out to a select group of invited users. Users can engage in natural language queries to locate photos, ask questions about locations and dates, and describe images they seek. Once identified, users can tap on the photo or album to view it in the Photos app. The features are available in the Gemini app for Android, but access is limited, and prompts must be in English. Users need to log into Gemini with the same Google account associated with Photos. The features resemble the "Ask Photos" test in early access through Google Labs, which integrates some of Gemini's functionality directly within the Photos app.
