GigaWiper: Anatomy of a destructive backdoor assembled from multiple malware

Microsoft Threat Intelligence has identified the GigaWiper malware, which has been detected in compromised environments since October 2025. This malware has destructive capabilities and comes in two forms: standalone wiper binaries and larger binaries with backdoor functionalities, both developed in Golang. The standalone wiper operates at the physical disk level, overwriting disk content and removing partition references. The backdoor variant includes the same wiper functionality and adds persistence through a registry key and scheduled tasks, along with command and control communication via RabbitMQ and Redis. GigaWiper can execute various commands, including wiping drives, triggering a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD), file encryption that mimics ransomware behavior, and managing system elements. The malware integrates components from multiple malware families, including wipers and ransomware mechanisms, and has been linked to a previous malware known as FlockWiper. To defend against GigaWiper, organizations are advised to implement security measures such as tamper protection, blocking access to known C2 infrastructure, and utilizing endpoint detection and response solutions. Microsoft Defender provides detections for GigaWiper and related malware, and threat intelligence reports are available for customers to stay informed about threats. Indicators of compromise include specific SHA-256 hashes and IP addresses associated with GigaWiper.

LineageOS announces browser flashing, Android 17 plans, and new supported devices

LineageOS has released its "Summertime updates," introducing a new browser-based flashing tool for installing LineageOS directly from web browsers, supporting Fastboot, ADB, and Samsung’s Odin protocol. The Updater app has been redesigned with a Material 3 aesthetic and now displays the Android Security Bulletin (ASB) level for each update. The update process has been optimized to stream A/B OTA packages by default. OEMs reveal Windows 11 Secure Boot fix after deadline passes, here’s how to update your PC

Major PC manufacturers, including HP, Dell, ASUS, Lenovo, MSI, Acer, Samsung, LG, and Microsoft’s Surface division, have provided guidance on transitioning to new Secure Boot certificates as the expiration of Microsoft’s 2011 certificates approaches. The expiration will occur in three phases: Microsoft Corporation KEK CA 2011 expired on June 24, 2026; Microsoft UEFI CA 2011 expired on June 27, 2026; and Microsoft Windows Production PCA 2011 is set to expire on October 19, 2026. Microsoft has begun rolling out replacement certificates through Windows Update, contingent on OEMs providing compatible BIOS updates. ASUS offers detailed documentation for both consumer and commercial devices, confirming that most users will receive updates automatically. Lenovo provides direct download links for BIOS updates organized by product family and specifies which products will not receive updates. Dell's support article covers its entire product lineup, noting that devices with an End of Service Life before January 1, 2026, will not receive updates. HP outlines a dual-track approach for updates, with specific timelines for commercial PCs. Microsoft's Surface devices receive updates directly from Microsoft, while MSI categorizes guidance based on processor generation for its laptops. Acer emphasizes backing up the BitLocker recovery key and provides a model table for confirmed BIOS release dates. Samsung confirms that all PCs running Windows 10 or 11 will function normally post-expiration, but security updates will cease. LG has released a guide for checking BIOS updates for its PCs.
