An Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 owner experienced the disappearance of their RTX GPU due to the Windows maintenance task pnpclean.dll, which removed the Nvidia driver package after the GPU had been in Eco mode for approximately 15 days. Eco mode disconnects the discrete GPU from the PCIe bus, causing Windows to register it as missing hardware. The pnpclean.dll routine removes drivers for devices absent beyond a timeout, which is reportedly 30 days by default but observed at 15 days in this case. Switching back to Normal or Hybrid mode makes the GPU reappear, but it is recognized only via the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, requiring a full Nvidia driver reinstall. To check if a system was affected, users can run a specific PowerShell command. A registry fix involves setting the DWORD Autorun from 1 to 0 to prevent automatic cleanup. This issue is considered rare, requiring extended use of Eco mode, and while no hardware is harmed, the silent removal of the GPU driver raises concerns about automated OS processes. Neither Microsoft nor Asus has publicly addressed the issue as of late August 2026.

A recent update to the Google app has introduced the Ask Gemini button within Android's text selection menu, simplifying the process of querying the Gemini AI. This feature allows users to engage with Gemini by long-pressing the power button on most Android devices, and upon tapping the Ask Gemini option, selected text is automatically pasted into the Gemini app for immediate use. The feature is available in versions 17.51.19 and 17.51.18 of the Google app and can be found in the context menus of various browsers, including Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox, as well as third-party applications like WhatsApp and Slack. The Ask Gemini option enhances user interaction with the AI across different platforms and has been rolled out through a server-side update.

Android Pulse has been launched on the Google Play Store and has over ten million downloads. The app operates in the background on Android devices, monitoring the performance of the operating system and installed applications. Its primary function is to conduct software diagnostics to identify irregularities in app behavior, particularly focusing on applications that consume excessive resources like battery life or CPU power. The app facilitates rule distribution for anomaly detection in critical system resource consumption, but it is unclear how it responds to detected issues.

This week, insights into datacenter technology reveal a shift in GPU dominance, with companies exploring alternatives. Cerebras, founded by Andrew Feldman, has developed chips the size of dinner plates that contain 44 gigabytes of ultra-fast SRAM, circumventing high-bandwidth memory supply constraints. In 2024, Cerebras launched an inference server that processes tokens faster than any GPU configuration, utilizing structured sparsity and partnering with AWS and AMD. The latest Cerebras chips, CS-4 systems, feature a modular architecture that doubles performance and bandwidth. Google is also moving towards custom silicon with its Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), while Marvell competes with Broadcom in providing IP for custom chips. Waymo announced a custom machine learning accelerator for its autonomous vehicles to enhance compute density and address limitations of previous FPGA use. On the software side, Microsoft is reintroducing the ability to move the taskbar in Windows 11, responding to user feedback after nearly five years. This change reflects Microsoft's focus on user experience amid competition from alternatives like macOS and Linux.

Google's Android Pulse app is an update option in the Play Store, designed to monitor the performance of other applications and components within the Android ecosystem. It detects unusual resource consumption patterns, such as excessive battery drain or spikes in memory and processing power usage. The app has been available since March and has over 10 million downloads. Its icon resembles a heartbeat monitor, symbolizing its role in checking the "vitals" of the Android system. Users can find Android Pulse in the Play Store by checking for available updates.
