Microsoft is reducing the functionality of Windows Media Player Legacy in the latest update, Windows 11 Experimental Build 29648.1000, by restricting caption controls. Users can no longer enable captions in the legacy player and are prompted to switch to the modern Media Player instead. This change was first noted by Windows enthusiast Xeno Panther and indicates a deliberate move by Microsoft to encourage users to adopt the newer application. In the previous Experimental Build 26340.9212, captions were still operational, but the latest build has removed options for Off and Defaults, leaving only "On if available." When attempting to activate captions, users receive a message stating that captions cannot be enabled in Windows Media Player Legacy. The modern Media Player does offer enhanced caption customization features, such as font size and color adjustments, but it has been criticized for its performance issues. The modern app takes longer to open videos and consumes significantly more RAM while idle compared to the legacy version. Additionally, the modern Media Player requires users to purchase HEVC Video Extensions to play HEVC files, which the legacy player supports without additional costs. Despite these changes, the Legacy Media Player still retains features like library view and CD burning, and it remains an optional feature in Windows 11. Microsoft has previously removed other functionalities from the legacy player, such as the Sync tab in 2023. As users look for alternatives, third-party open-source media players like VLC and mpv are becoming more popular, with mpv recommended for its performance and minimal interface.

Microsoft has announced a major redesign of the context menus in File Explorer and on the desktop for Windows 11, aimed at improving the right-click experience by making it faster, less cluttered, and more customizable. Preview builds with the new context menu are being rolled out for Windows Insiders for testing and feedback. The updated menu addresses previous issues of clutter and sluggishness, allowing for a simpler and quicker user experience. Users can customize their context menus by enabling or disabling specific actions and hiding third-party app extensions. Additionally, users have the option to revert to the Windows 10 context menu layout within Windows 11. The new layout presents fewer actions and allows main commands to be listed inline, with Properties moved to the bottom. A broader rollout of these features is expected later this fall.

Rusty Lake's "Servant of the Lake" is a point-and-click puzzle adventure game that explores themes of familial obligation and tradition in a rural setting. The gameplay is linear, with predetermined paths and an emphasis on uncovering secrets rather than making significant choices. The game has received positive feedback, achieving an "overwhelmingly positive" rating on Steam with over 4,500 reviews and a peak of 28,000 concurrent users on its launch day. Rusty Lake co-founder Robin Ras expressed satisfaction with the game's success, which mirrors that of their previous title, "The Past Within." The game is currently available on Steam at a discounted price until August 27, and a free demo is also offered. The studio is planning future projects, including another game titled "Falling Apart."

Microsoft is introducing a customizable right-click context menu in Windows 11 to enhance user experience and streamline interactions within File Explorer. Users will be able to add frequently used commands and remove less relevant ones to reduce clutter. This feature is available in the latest Windows 11 Insider build (26340.9212) but requires users to install a utility called Vivetool to enable it. The new menu allows users to modify commands such as Send to, Print, Create shortcut, Copy as path, and Rotate image, and offers options for displaying commands in different formats. Users can also manage app extensions and reposition commands within the menu. The customizable menu is not yet publicly available, but there are plans for its rollout by the end of the year, depending on user feedback.

The Windows Format dialog box was initially created in late 1994 by Microsoft engineer Dave W. Plummer as a temporary solution during the transition from Windows 95 UI to Windows NT. It has remained largely unchanged for over three decades, retaining many of the same options and layout, despite the advancements in Windows 11's design. The dialog box has effectively functioned over the years, leading to a lack of updates or complaints from users. Additionally, the FAT32 format limit of 32GB, also established by Plummer, persisted until it was raised to 2TB in 2024, although the maximum file size remains at 4GB. Windows 11 features many elements from older versions, including the Windows 7 personalization menu and the Disk Management utility, showcasing a blend of nostalgia and functionality.
