Windows 11 26H2 Update Lowers RAM Consumption

Microsoft's Windows 11 26H2 update has introduced optimizations that reduce RAM consumption during idle periods and improve RAM management during active use. Users have reported a decrease in idle RAM usage by approximately 2 to 3 GB, with testing showing a drop from 10 GB to 7 GB on a laptop with 16 GB of RAM. The update also includes the Low Latency Profile feature, which boosts CPU performance for 1 to 3 seconds, resulting in faster application launch times—up to 40% faster for Microsoft applications like Edge and Outlook, and up to 70% for elements like the Start Menu and context menus.

How to supercharge your Windows 11 PC with this built-in automation tool

Windows 11 includes a Task Scheduler that automates repetitive tasks to enhance productivity. To set up a task, users should open Task Scheduler, select "Create Task," and fill in details under General, Triggers, Actions, Conditions, and Settings. It's important for laptop users to avoid scheduling tasks that run every five minutes to maintain low-power idle states. The "Run with highest privileges" option should be used cautiously for security reasons. Three recommended automations include: 1. Using WinGet to keep software updated with the command winget upgrade --all --silent --accept-package-agreements --accept-source-agreements --disable-interactivity, scheduled weekly. 2. Disabling unnecessary startup applications and launching them with a delayed logon trigger to reduce startup clutter. 3. Automating tasks with PowerShell for file transfers or system maintenance, ensuring they run during idle times or when connected to AC power. Windows also performs some maintenance tasks automatically, such as deleting temporary files and optimizing drives.

RuneScape dev apologises after RuneFest debut of an AI-generated six-fingered character: ‘That’s pretty hard to explain away’

Jagex hosted its annual RuneFest in Birmingham, UK, where it unveiled a trailer for the Dragon Slayer 2 quest. The trailer featured noticeable flaws, such as a character with six fingers and unusual sneaker-like soles on their armoured shoes. Social media users pointed out the apparent use of generative AI in the trailer, prompting backlash against Jagex, especially after a recent controversy involving a clothing collaboration with 100 Thieves. Alec 'Mod Sween' Sween from Old School RuneScape acknowledged the issues, stating that the trailer had been taken down for urgent investigation. He clarified that it was produced by a trusted external partner who assured Jagex that generative AI would not be used. Sween emphasized the company's commitment to quality and announced plans to overhaul their review procedures and collaborate with community creators to ensure high standards for Dragon Slayer 2. He admitted that the team fell short of expectations and expressed concern over the incident highlighting weaknesses in their internal processes.

This Google Play Store alternative is my first stop for Android apps now – here’s why

F-Droid, an alternative app store for Android, has undergone a significant transformation with a new user-friendly interface designed to enhance usability and accessibility. It operates independently of Google, offering only free and open-source software (FOSS) applications, allowing users to inspect and modify the code. Each app is vetted for security issues before being added to the repository, although the vetting process is not exhaustive. The new interface, developed using Kotlin Compose and aligned with Android Material Design principles, features a streamlined layout with three main sections: Discover, Search, and My Apps. The category system has been improved, and the search functionality now allows users to search by app titles, descriptions, and categories. Installation and updating processes have been refined to provide a seamless experience similar to that of the Google Play Store. These changes come at a time when Google has modified its sideloading process, potentially raising concerns about alternative app sources.

OM SDK sandbox cuts Android ad session start to 11 ms, IAB Tech Lab says

IAB Tech Lab has released version 1.6.10 of its Open Measurement SDK for Android, introducing the ability for verification scripts for native ads to run within Android's Jetpack JavaScriptEngine instead of the traditional WebView. This update, effective from October 1, 2026, allows for a significant reduction in verification check initiation time, with the sandbox environment taking approximately 11 milliseconds compared to 268 milliseconds in the WebView. Applications that do not implement this new feature will continue to function as before, and HTML-based ads are not included in this update. The JavaScriptEngine library allows JavaScript evaluation without a WebView, reducing resource consumption and enabling compatibility with background services. The adoption process for this feature involves updating to OM SDK Android 1.6.10 or later, integrating the androidx.javascriptengine dependency, and maintaining the sandbox throughout the app's lifecycle.

Nadella has lost the plot calling Copilot an OS again, it’s a web app on Windows 11

Satya Nadella has referred to Copilot as a “new OS for work” during a leadership update, following Microsoft's introduction of the latest iteration of Copilot. The new Copilot app, which replaces the previously named Microsoft 365 Copilot, is currently available for users, although some features like Home, Code, and Autopilot are still forthcoming. The app operates as a standard Windows application, specifically a rebranded Microsoft Edge launcher built on a Chromium framework. Nadella reiterated his vision for Copilot in a post dated October 1, emphasizing its role in consolidating various work functions into a single platform. The Copilot app integrates features such as Home, Office applications, and a proactive command center named Today. Currently, the app primarily functions as a chat interface, with significant features yet to be rolled out. The architecture of Copilot relies on a lightweight launcher and a complete Edge build, resulting in high RAM consumption. Microsoft has shifted Copilot’s architecture from a native WinUI version to a web-based wrapper, supported by a secondary component for additional functionalities. Internal documents reveal a vision for a prototype called CopilotOS, indicating a long-standing ambition to create a cohesive workspace.
