One click let you escape Microsoft’s forced sign-in on Windows 11. Of course, Microsoft killed it

Recent changes in Windows 11's setup process have made it difficult for users to create local accounts, as the previously accessible link for bypassing the Microsoft account requirement now redirects to a data management page. Testing of the latest Windows 11 26H2 ISO revealed that this shortcut has been closed off, with no option to proceed without a Microsoft account. Microsoft has been actively blocking methods to skip the account requirement over the past year, citing concerns about incomplete configurations. Despite some acknowledgment of user frustrations from Microsoft executives, there is no indication that the Microsoft account requirement will be relaxed. Users seeking a simple local account option continue to face cumbersome alternatives, leading to calls for a more user-friendly setup process.

Your old phone isn’t useless: 4 smart ways to get more life out of it

Phone upgrades often lead to replacing devices every couple of years, but old phones still hold value. Users typically choose to deal with their old phones in the following ways: 26% sell or trade it in, 26% hand it down to family or friends, 42% turn it into a dedicated gadget, and 5% let it sit in a drawer. Old phones can be kept as second devices for personal and work separation, used as an Android Auto display, or serve as a backup phone for emergencies. They can also be repurposed into gadgets like dash cams, security cameras, music players, e-readers, universal remotes, or PC companions. Additionally, they can replace webcams, act as second screens, or provide portable storage. If repurposing isn’t appealing, selling the phone is a practical option, with a strong market for used phones on platforms like SellCell, Swappa, eBay, or Facebook Marketplace. Trading it in may yield better benefits, especially with retailer promotions, and donating it to charity is another option.

LG monitors criticized for silently installing McAfee ads via Windows Update

LG monitors have been reported to automatically install an application promoting paid subscriptions to McAfee antivirus software when connected to Windows PCs. This occurs via the LG Monitor App Installer, which is delivered through Windows Update without user approval. The app installs itself seamlessly upon connection and has been noted to present McAfee promotional offers on 31 out of 32 system boots. It operates with "runFullTrust" permissions, allowing it to launch at startup and display ads after system reboots. Reports of this behavior date back to at least 2024, affecting even older LG monitors. Users can remove the app through Windows Settings and disable startup entries, while Windows Pro and Enterprise users can implement a policy to block automatic downloads of applications linked to device metadata.

Microsoft is finally fixing the worst thing about Windows Search, but you can’t try it just yet

Search results now clearly indicate their source, and promotional content has been removed from web results. Users can customize their experience by disabling web and Microsoft Store suggestions. Improvements in typo tolerance allow common misspellings to yield correct results, and local files and settings are prioritized more effectively. Support for two-character file searches has been introduced, and reliability fixes have been implemented to address crashes and loading issues. These updates are expected to be rolled out to the broader user base in the coming months.

This hidden Gmail trick gives you virtually unlimited email IDs

In the digital age, users often consider creating new Gmail accounts to take advantage of subscription services and promotional offers. However, a simpler solution is to use Gmail aliases by adding a dot or a + sign to their existing email address. For example, variations like this.is.my.email@gmail.com or thisismyemail+ikea@gmail.com are recognized as the same address by Gmail. This method allows users to subscribe to services without creating new accounts and helps monitor the sharing of personal information. No special settings are required; users just need to modify their email before the @ symbol.
