No Man’s Sky dev shares another reminder of how hard game dev is: 20 different formats to balance, with “around 140 combinations of graphics options” on PC

Minecraft drops VR support across all platforms

Mojang announced that Minecraft will cease support for VR headsets starting in March. The developer stated that its ability to support VR/MR devices has ended, with a final update scheduled for that month. While PC players can still access the VR version post-update, it will lack virtual reality components. This decision follows complaints from Oculus users about performance issues and aligns with a survey indicating a decline in the VR market. Meta has closed its first-party VR developer, Ready at Dawn, while Canadian studio Archiact has also shut down. In contrast, Sony is expanding its VR presence with PC support for PSVR2 and new titles, experiencing a surge in sales after a price drop.

Windows 11 is now the most popular OS for Steam users worldwide, though it took longer than Windows 10 did

Windows 11 has become the most popular operating system among Steam users, accounting for 49.17% of surveyed computers as of August, surpassing Windows 10 at 47.09%. Older Microsoft operating systems like Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 have significantly lower usage, with 0.037% and 0.07%, respectively. The trend is attributed to new gaming PCs being preinstalled with Windows 11 and factors such as the PSVR2 PC Adapter and the rise of Simplified Chinese machines. Additionally, gamers with less than 10GB of free hard drive space face challenges that impact their gaming experience.

PlayStation VR2 Users Might Not Need the Adapter to Play Games on PC After All – IGN

Sony has introduced PC VR support for the PSVR2, allowing users to play popular PC VR titles like Half-Life: Alyx. To use this feature, a PC adapter is required, but some users have found a workaround by connecting the headset's USB-C cable directly to compatible graphics cards and downloading the PSVR2 Steam App. This workaround relies on the VirtualLink USB-C port, which is available on select GPUs, primarily from the GeForce RTX 20 series and AMD's Radeon RX 6000 and RX 7000 series. However, compatibility can vary, and some users experience Bluetooth connectivity issues with the PSVR2's Sense Controllers when not using the adapter. While the PSVR2 has impressive specifications, it has struggled in the market, and reports indicate cuts to funding for VR development. The addition of PC VR support allows access to a wider game library, but not all PSVR2 features are functional on PC.
