Australian law enforcement arrested 55 individuals in a recent operation targeting organized crime, aided by intelligence from a backdoored messaging application called AN0M. AN0M was developed by the FBI and Australia’s Federal Police (AFP) after the shutdown of a service called Phantom Secure, which facilitated encrypted communications for criminals. AN0M users were unaware that the app contained a backdoor for authorities to access their messages. In 2022, the Australian High Court ruled that AN0M’s operations were legal, as it functioned as a closed system. The recent raids in South Australia were part of the ongoing efforts under "Operation Ironside," which has seen multiple waves of activity linked to AN0M. The operation led to the restraint of assets valued at AUD 8 million. The AFP continues to push for access to encrypted communications to improve public safety investigations.

TuneIn's CEO, Rich Stern, highlighted the partnership's goal of making emergency alerts accessible through everyday apps and devices. The initiative aims to provide automotive manufacturers with a cost-effective way to deliver critical public safety updates through the TuneIn app in vehicles.

The Canadian government has invested over billion in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives since 2016, with funding exceeding 4 million across 29 departments and agencies. Notable expenditures include a ,522 grant from Public Safety Canada for a study on radicalization linked to gaming communities, a .2 million award to the Canadian Women’s Chamber of Commerce for developing virtual reality software for women entrepreneurs, a ,000 grant for research on gender and race in Canada’s space program, and a ,595 grant to the University of British Columbia for establishing a research network on parks and protected areas. Concerns have been raised by lawmakers about the effectiveness and transparency of these expenditures, with calls for clear metrics to evaluate outcomes. Harvard cognitive scientist Steven Pinker cautioned that DEI mandates might inhibit free inquiry and stifle dissenting voices.

Messaging app Telegram has applied for registration in Nepal after facing a ban imposed by the Nepal Telecommunications Authority due to its association with criminal activities. The ban, enacted in July, followed an increase in cybercrime linked to Telegram, including cyber fraud. Telegram is known for its cloud-based architecture, encryption, and privacy features, which have made it popular for secure communication but also a platform for illicit activities. Recent scrutiny has led to Telegram's co-founder, Pavel Durov, being arrested in France amid an investigation into crimes facilitated by the app. Although Telegram has started complying with legal requests in certain jurisdictions, this does not include Nepal. The Nepalese government is seeking to establish a framework that balances user privacy with public safety as it considers Telegram's registration.

Residents and visitors in Morong, Rizal, and Mambajao, Camiguin Island can now make emergency calls through messaging apps and social media platforms as part of a modernization initiative for emergency response systems. Mambajao activated its local 911 emergency hotline on February 27, becoming the first next-generation 911-enabled command center in Northern Mindanao, reducing response times to three to seven minutes. The Next Generation Advanced (NGA) 911 Philippines launched the NEXiS Message platform, allowing emergency calls via traditional voice methods, text messages, video calls, and popular applications like Facebook Messenger. This system consolidates incoming messages into a single platform, improving efficiency and response times while ensuring the security of shared information through encryption. NEXiS Message integrates with legacy and modern communication technologies and facilitates inter-agency collaboration. NGA 911 Philippines aims to expand next-generation 911 technology to more communities in the country and has received certification from the National Emergency Number Association (NENA).
