Windows offers built-in tools for screen recording, specifically the Game Bar and the Snipping Tool. The Game Bar, available in Windows 10 and 11, allows users to record screen activity, activate the microphone, and save recordings in MP4 format. To use the Game Bar, navigate to Settings > Gaming > Captures, and recordings are saved in the user folder under VideosCaptures. Users can start recording by pressing the Record button or using the shortcut Windows key + Alt + R. The Snipping Tool in Windows 11 can also record screens, requiring version 22621.1344 or higher. Users can launch it, define the recording area, and manage audio settings before and during recording. Recorded videos can be edited, saved, or shared directly from the respective tools.

Google has removed five applications from the Play Store that contained a new strain of malware called Mandrake, which has been downloaded approximately 32,000 times. Mandrake, which has enhanced spying capabilities, can monitor activities on infected devices, collect data, record screens, and simulate user interactions. The affected apps were available for over a year before their removal, and users must manually delete them from their devices to eliminate the threat. The five compromised applications are AirFS, Astro Explorer, Amber, CryptoPulsing, and Brain Matrix. Users in countries including the UK, Canada, Germany, Italy, Mexico, and Spain may have been affected. Google recommends enabling Play Protect to help mitigate risks associated with Mandrake. Users are advised to download apps only from official sources and to scrutinize app reviews and permissions.

A recent investigation by Kaspersky revealed a new variant of the Android spyware 'Mandrake,' which was found in five applications on Google Play, collectively downloaded over 32,000 times. These apps were available for at least a year, with the last one, AirFS, removed in March 2024. The original Mandrake malware was first documented in 2020 and has been active since at least 2016. The identified apps are: - AirFS – 30,305 downloads (April 28, 2022, to March 15, 2024) - Astro Explorer – 718 downloads (May 30, 2022, to June 6, 2023) - Amber – 19 downloads (February 27, 2022, to August 19, 2023) - CryptoPulsing – 790 downloads (November 2, 2022, to June 6, 2023) - Brain Matrix – 259 downloads (April 27, 2022, to June 6, 2023) The majority of downloads came from Canada, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Spain, Peru, and the UK. Mandrake evades detection by hiding malicious code in a native library and employs a multi-stage loading process. Once activated, it can collect data, record screens, execute commands, simulate user actions, manage files, and prompt users to install additional malicious apps. It also uses techniques to bypass restrictions on APK installations and can hide its icon on devices. The latest variant includes battery evasion techniques and checks for security tools and device status. Although the identified apps are no longer on Google Play, the Mandrake threat remains, with potential for new variants to appear. Users are advised to install apps from reputable sources and be cautious with permissions.
