ViperSoftX Malware Used by Threat Actors to Steal Sensitive Information

The AhnLab Security Intelligence Center (ASEC) has reported that ViperSoftX malware, first identified in 2020, continues to pose a significant threat, particularly targeting cryptocurrency-related information. It disguises itself as cracked software or eBooks on torrent sites and uses deceptive tactics to infect users globally. ViperSoftX exploits the Windows Task Scheduler to execute malicious PowerShell scripts and communicates with its command-and-control server to transmit detailed system information. The malware captures clipboard activity to steal cryptocurrency wallet addresses and employs mechanisms to avoid detection, including self-removal. It also deploys secondary payloads like Quasar RAT and ClipBanker, which hijacks wallet addresses during transactions. ASEC warns that infections can lead to total system compromise and advises users to avoid unverified downloads and maintain updated security measures. This app has been shipping with Windows for decades, and it needs to go away

The Character Map is a tool in Windows designed to help users access uncommon characters and symbols not available on the keyboard. However, it is considered convoluted and unnecessary due to its complicated access process and cumbersome selection method. Microsoft has introduced a more efficient emoji keyboard in Windows 11, which allows users to quickly select symbols by pressing Windows + . (period) and is more user-friendly than the Character Map. The emoji panel saves the last twelve used symbols for easy access. It is suggested that the Character Map would be better suited as a feature within Microsoft Office, where symbol selection is more relevant. The Character Map is viewed as one of several outdated features in Windows 11 that may need removal to improve the user experience.

Fed up with prompts to use Edge? Windows 11 users in Europe won’t get them anymore, but sadly everyone else will

Microsoft is adjusting its Edge browser experience for users in the European Economic Area (EEA) due to the Digital Markets Act. Edge will no longer prompt users to set it as their default browser incessantly; instead, it will only request this when users open Edge directly. This change was implemented with version 137.0.3296.52 at the end of May. Additionally, web searches conducted via the Windows search box will open in the user's chosen default browser rather than Edge. These enhancements are rolling out throughout June in the EEA. Windows users in the EEA will also soon have the option to uninstall the Microsoft Store, expected to be available in 2025, while applications installed via the store will continue to receive updates. Users outside the EEA, particularly in the United States, will not see similar changes and will continue to experience aggressive promotion of Edge.
