A 72-year-old man named Cyril Taylor received a suspended prison sentence after admitting to sending an indecent image of a child via the messaging app Kik, not realizing he was communicating with an undercover police officer. He was sentenced to nine months in prison for two offenses but had the sentence suspended for 18 months due to a "realistic prospect of rehabilitation." Taylor previously faced convictions for possessing and distributing indecent images of children and had a ten-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) issued in early 2023, which prohibited him from using social media applications with direct messaging capabilities. Despite these restrictions, he downloaded Kik in June 2023 and sent an indecent image of a child aged around nine or ten years old. Law enforcement discovered him deleting the app after being notified of his actions. In total, he has two convictions for seven offenses, including a breach of the SHPO involving Facebook Messenger in April 2024. The judge imposed a suspended sentence of nine months, mandated 100 hours of community service, and required participation in 26 rehabilitation sessions.

Microsoft has announced the codename for its upcoming Xbox console: Project Helix. This new device will be capable of playing Xbox and PC games. Asha Sharma, the new CEO of Xbox, expressed excitement about Project Helix, indicating it will lead in performance and compatibility with Xbox and PC games. Speculation suggests a potential launch date in 2027. The console's ability to support PC VR games remains uncertain, as compatibility may depend on access to the Steam library and whether Project Helix can function like a standard Windows PC. Microsoft has a complex history with virtual reality, having previously supported Windows Mixed Reality and announced VR capabilities for the Xbox One X, which were later retracted.

Capcom replaced Denuvo DRM with Enigma for the 2023 remake of Resident Evil 4 on Steam, leading to significant performance issues reported by players. YouTuber ItalicMaze compared the game's performance with and without Enigma, revealing a decline in frame rates, particularly during intense gameplay. Digital Foundry confirmed an approximate 20-percent decrease in performance. In response to the backlash, Capcom removed the Enigma DRM on March 3, 28 days after the update, as noted in the SteamDB changelog. This incident follows a similar situation with Resident Evil Village in 2021, where pirated versions outperformed the official release due to the absence of DRM, leading Capcom to remove Denuvo from that game in April 2023 without replacement.

The F-Droid team published an open letter to Google, supported by 35 organizations, expressing concerns about Google's changes to the Android ecosystem. Many Android users rely on Google for app installations, facing challenges when trying to use alternative app stores or open-source apps without verification. Some developers are shifting to progressive web apps instead of Android. Alternatives to Google's verification system include non-certified Android devices and privacy-focused ROMs like LineageOS or GrapheneOS, but these options come with security vulnerabilities and installation difficulties for most users. Telecom companies impose restrictions on devices to ensure they work on their networks, leading to a reliance on stock software and security updates from Google and manufacturers.

Russian military personnel in Ukraine have been advised against using the state-sponsored messaging application, Max, due to security concerns raised by pro-war military bloggers. Directives have been issued to prohibit the use and installation of Max, described sarcastically as the “most secure national messenger in the world.” An alternative communication program is expected to be introduced for frontline use, although details remain undisclosed. The Russian Digital Development Ministry has noted that while Telegram will not be blocked for troops, foreign intelligence agencies may access its correspondence, posing risks for the Russian military. The Federal Security Service has warned that Ukraine’s military could obtain information shared via Telegram, which could be used for tactical advantages.

Adults in Australia will soon face new age verification requirements when downloading applications, similar to changes being implemented in Brazil, Singapore, and two U.S. states—Louisiana and Utah. Users will need to confirm their age through payment methods or by declaring an age range. This could restrict younger users from accessing apps even with parental consent if there is a mismatch in age verification. Apps like Discord and Meta’s Messenger have age ratings of 18+, preventing younger users from downloading them. Reddit is also classified for users 18 and over, despite potential eligibility for those aged 16 and older. The flexibility and implications of these age verification changes remain uncertain as further clarification is expected.

Russian military personnel have been advised to stop using the messaging application Max due to security concerns, as reported by Mediazona. This recommendation follows intensified restrictions on Telegram, which began in the summer of 2025. The Federal Security Service (FSB) has warned that Ukrainian forces can intercept Telegram communications, prompting worries about the safety of sensitive information. Access to Telegram has been increasingly limited, with plans for further restrictions on media file access reported by RBC. Pro-war advocates, including Sergey Mironov, have criticized these limitations and defended Telegram as a reliable communication tool. Despite the Kremlin's claims that troops do not rely on Telegram, the Russian Defense Ministry asserts that they use standard communications equipment and a domestically developed messenger. On February 18, Russian Digital Development Minister Maksut Shadaev stated that Telegram would not be blocked for frontline use for now.
